Clippers sign Moses Brown; stacked roster seems complete

Post#1 » by HotRocks34 » Sun Jul 10, 2022 4:40 am

Here's the story. Brown is a center and would (apparently) fill the spot left by departing big man Isaiah Hartenstein:

https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2022/07/clippers-signing-moses-brown-xavier-moon-jay-scrubb.html

The Clippers have reached agreements with Moses Brown, Xavier Moon and Jay Scrubb, and all three will be on the roster for training camp, tweets Mirjam Swanson of The Orange County Register. The Clippers confirmed the signings via a tweet.

The reports on the signings give the impression that Brown may have to compete for a roster spot (the Clips have one regular-roster spot open now and one two-way spot open, it seems) in training camp. However, the Clips only have one legit center on the squad currently (Zubac) and so Brown would seem to have an edge in any fight for a roster spot against the other new signees Scrubb and Moon (both shooting guards).

If Brown sticks, LA's depth chart might look something like this (* = new to team; - = return from injury):

Wall*.............Jackson..................Preston
George-..........Powell...................Kennard............Coffey
Leonard-.........Covington...............Mann................Boston
Morris............Batum....................______
Zubac............Brown*(?)................______

Pretty much 13-14 guys there who can play (not counting Preston; we'll see on Brown but he won't need to do much IMO). Finally a real point guard. Etc.

Have to see how Wall looks and how George/Leonard look coming back from injuries. Also, if Brown doesn't get the job done (or even if he does ok), the Clips might still want to try to add a better big man option around, say, the buyout season.

Brown is a huge guy who seems to particularly excel at offensive rebounding. He was with the Mavs for awhile last year and I was hoping he would get more run. But he has a lot to work on. He's young (22).

Clips look stacked. As usual, much will come down to health.

I don't think Moses Brown gets anything other than a two-way.

I view the lineups more like this
PG: Wall, Jackson, Preston
SG: Powell, Kennard, Coffey,
SF: George, Mann, Boston
PF: Leonard, Covington, Diabate
C: Zubac, Batum, Brown

I can see them signing Baynes if his workouts for NBA teams go well, he'd be a much better backup big than Moses Brown

Every season, I keep hearing “Clips are stacked”, and it’s just castaway signings and half cripples.

Idk man…I wish the clips all the best, but I don’t know how much better they’ll do this season, regardless of health.

They will be a top 3 team in the West if healthy [Kawhi & pg play 75% or more of games]

If Baynes is ready for a comeback then yeah, I'd take him over Brown.

Could be interesting to see Batum more at center. Also Morris.

Whatever the lineups, the team is stacked.

I don't think they would ask Brown to do much. Guard the rim, rebound. That's pretty much it. He doesn't have to do anything else. Also, they could just work on developing him long-term.

The Clippers are not better than the Warriors, Suns, Grizzlies, Nuggets, Lakers.

Health is always a question. No doubt on that. But this team has the depth to handle "load management", I think. But it's going nowhere if, like, Kawhi tears another ACL.

A huge hole for the Clips for years was a real point guard to run the offense. Beverley was a liability with that and Jackson is more a score-first guy IMO. Wall could really help out if he's ready to roll.

Many "ifs" here, as always. But this team has serious talent IMO. They just need/needed that legit backup big man. Maybe it's Brown and maybe it's not. Or maybe Brown can do enough to get them to Buyout Season and they can get a big for the stretch run.

They can be 20 deep, it doesn't matter if Kawhi can't play or sits out due to "load management" for half the year.

He's the key. Have to see how he looks.

It takes time to come back from an ACL. He may not be up to par this year. If that's the case, then the Clips likely will fall short of their hopes.

Without Kawhi, it doesn't matter. He's the key to a championship run.

John Wall / Reggie Jackson / Jason Preston
Norman Powell / Luke Kennard / BJ Boston
Paul George / Tre Mann / Amir Coffey / Jay Scrubb
Kawhi Leonard/ Marcus Morris / Nicolas Batum / Moussa Diabate*
Robert Covington/ Ivica Zubac / Moses Brown*

At least he played 60+ games in those two seasons. The Clippers would kill for that right now.

We shall see if the NBA allows the load managing because they have been more (ha) strict on it. But, yes, without Kawhi the Clippers won't go far.
