Even the bad teams with a lot of assets likely feel good about their situation moving forward and have no real desire to compete imminently.

Damian Lillard: “All I want to do is win”

Also Damian Lillard: Let me take up $60 million in cap space.

To this day, Lillard has never taken a paycut to build a roster in Portland.

Lillard is smart enough to see the reality that the Blazers aren't building anything remotely resembling a championship team in the near future, which is all that is relevant to him as a player. Saying you care only about winning will sell in Portland, where he is a living legend. He'll ride off into the sunset a very wealthy man and a lock HOFer.

I'd love to do a deep dive, one of these days, on the Portland situation since they drafted Dame and find all the ways they went wrong.

I don’t think Lillard ever said that. Said he was loyal a bunch, which they paid off.

These guys they don’t fall into perfect scenarios are in a no win situation where guys that leave are called ring chasers and guys that stay don’t want to win.

I think most people would kill to have that no-win situation. If I’m Dame, I just make a choice, stick to it, enjoy the spoils of both my hard work and genetic fortune, and don’t worry that somewhere in some corner of the NBA forum-verse someone is unhappy about my choice. I think he generally gets that.

Oh yeah I just mean “no-win” in terms of what the social media and TV haters are going to say. Doubt he cares about that.

Warriors just won with Steph being the highest paid guy in the league, also.

Helps a lot when your highest paid player is a top 5 all timer still at his peak when it counts.

Yeah that’s been around for a while. I don’t think it was injury history, more that teams looked at his knees and there were really serious potential issues that teams thought would result in him having a limited career, which is why he fell to the second round despite being one of the best players in college basketball that year and having a clear NBA role. Also played a role in why the Bucks didn’t want to pay him and probably why his trade market was so light.

Looking around the league and it is crazy how deep the Clippers are when you look down their roster.

PG: John Wall
SG: Kawhi Leonard
SF: Paul George
PF: Marcus Morris
C: Ivica Zubac
Bench: Norm Powell, Reggie Jackson, RoCo, Nicolas Batum, Terance Mann, Luke Kennard, and Amir Coffey

Obviously it comes down to Kawhi and PG's health, but having the back of your bench be players like Kennard and Coffey is ridiculous.

Eww. Hate the play in. Makes that entire 82 game schedule mean even less imo

Health is the only reason they don't win the title, IMO. That roster is insane. It's talented AND well constructed spearheaded by an all time great. If there's a weakness it's still at PG. Not sure Wall is still useful at this point. His Houston stint was very empty calorie stat padding.

Signing Wall wasn’t even necessary IMO. Him getting any minutes is just going to screw them up. Just let Reggie start.

Yeah, you sure about that? Might want to look again.

And yeah, Wall’s like 5 months younger and significantly more injury prone. Go figure.

To be fair, they already had a rather complete roster prior to FA. Not sure any signing they could have made would have been "necessary."

I think Wall's a nice gamble though. Talented passer that can facilitate. Had the entire year off so maybe he'll have a late-career renaissance like Horford did with Boston.
