Oh look Stewart is top 10 in rim protection in modern stats that matter. Like Cade said hes the defensive identity of the Pistons. So much hate on young Stewart because his points and boards arent high. Stewart is setting up for a huge year 3!
Guess who we dont see? Ayton a guy alot of the Stewart haters wanted.

He needs to keep working on his perimeter switch pick-ups because he's going to be playing the 4 plenty, a position he has never played before but he's good at Center and still improving. He just turned 21. Between his last 11 games of last season and these 2 summer league games, he's shooting 59% from 3.

Duren is 5 years younger. No need to way over-pay Ayton.

Without a doubt our best defender and even though people crap on his height and jumping ability, he did a very formidable job anchoring the defense last season.
Here's a look at defensive impact of players that play at least 20 MPG last season and played in at least 40 games. Stew also 6th in the NBA here in DFG% allowed at the rim at 51.9%
1. JJJ
2. Gobert
3. Nix Claxton (Brooklyn got him at a bargain rate resigned)
4. Robert Williams III
5. Jarret Allen
6. Beef Stew
7. Giannis

Re: Stewart elite defense
I have no issues with Stewart defensively.
And even offensively, I like his potential. But if he is moving to the 4, he’ll have to seriously improve his handle.
When playing the 4, he’ll likely need to dribble/handle the ball more than he’s used to. And when doing so, at least in the past, he’s been very prone to fumbling/losing possession. That’s the area of his game he needs to improve upon the most, IMO.

Re: Stewart elite defense
This is a little weird. I don't think Stewart has "haters", he has folks that bemoan his deficiencies, especially when it comes to the offense, and how that works with Cade.
With that said, with how he has played in summer league, and what he said about playing the 4, those concerns seem to lessening.
Stewart plays good defense, and rebounds at a good clip, but has problems handling the ball, and being able to grab a lob, something some have joked about, but when Bagley landed, Cades entire game opened up.
Now with him and Duren starting, it was amazing in summer league. I am now behind that as the starting frontcourt 100%. Besides that being a formidable front court, striking fear into gaurd everywhere, both can switch. If Stewart keeps letting them fly from three, and hitting at least 33%, then the Pistons just hit the damn jackpot.

21 year old potential all nba defensive team level defender with a + 3pt shot is very valuable. Thats what were looking at happening here as long as he keeps growing as a player.

I've had to defend his potential so many times on here. People calling a 21 year old potential all nba defensive player with a what could be a +3pt shot at "best a bench big" or as you put it ""bemoaning deficiencies" when hes been making huge improvements to his game that dont show up on the box scores. Even some of what I consider sharper posters here who I normally agree with on many things were bearish Stewart over the past 6 months.
There is posters right now mad we didnt get Ayton to make a failed playin push and have Stewart/Duren instead.

Nope, because he is very undersized and have the worst hands I have ever seen in my life. He have a really bad time grabing a pass. But I love Stewart.

According to NBA.com, he only attempted about one drive every 3 games last year.... and he had 0 TOs on his drives the entire season.
1. Cade 14.6 dribble drives to the basket per game and 1.0 TO per game on drives
2. Grant 8.3 dribble drives to the basket per game and 0.6 TO per game on drives
3. CoJo 6.8 dribble drives to the basket per game and 0.5 TO per game on drives
4. Hayes 6.4 dribble drives to the basket per game and 0.4 TO per game on drives
Stewart 0.3 dribble drives to the basket per game on 0.0 TO per game on drives.
Which equals about 21 drives to the basket on the year for him with no turnovers.
Beef Stew had 85 turnovers last year in 70 games played. The overwhelming majority of Stewart's TOs were offensive fouls (moving screens), 3 second calls, bad passes, traveling, and stepping out of bounds. Maybe 1 or 2 TOs on the entire season were while he was dribbling the ball.
You can watch all 85 of his TO's from last season here. https://www.nba.com/stats/players/boxscores/?Season=2021-22&SeasonType=Regular%20Season&Sorter=TOV&Direction=DESC&CF=PLAYER_NAME*E*stewart

It has been a very rough decade for Piston fans, and none of them(including myself)want to be fooled again, or buy into a lesser talent just because they are on the team. They want the sure(ish) thing.buzzkilloton wrote:zeebneeb wrote:This is a little weird. Thus the obsession with high draft picks, and multitudes of draft picks, and with tanking, because if you've got a steady flow of picks, and your team sucks, you can never get burned. We've all turned into the spurned lover.
If any of the current players show weakness, it's immediately pounced on. If any of the players have deficiencies, again, pounced on. We have all sat thru watching Andre Drummond have 32/20/5/5 games, and then pout, and crap the bed. We've all watched trades that bring in "big names" only to have them be just awful, or break down a year afterwards.
Stewart, and Hayes are a case study. Even with overwhelming evidence that being patient pays off, especially with some of the Pistons very own getting traded and becoming champions, or playing at a high level after their departure, it's much easier to just trade them away, and move onto the next shiny toy. That way you can't get burned.
It is what it is. Stewart has looked really good alongside Duren, who is a top tier lob threat, and combined they look stout defensively, and will absolutely work offensively if Stewart really is a deep threat, so the lane is clean for Cade, Ivey, and Duren.
I'm ready to commit.
Cade
Ivey
Bey
Stewart
Duren
Let's see what happens!

Hayes has been the worst offensive player in basketball the past two seasons. Hes possibly not even a NBA player. He is NOTHING like Stewart. Stewart is 100% a long term NBA player and one of Weavers guys.
Some players need to change scenery or coaching to get there career on track thats why you see them "play at a high level after departure". Thats why I dont sit around complaining about XXX guy going somewhere else and being good after they leave. Sometimes they need to leave to get the light bulb turned on and improve. Sometimes its a playing time problem or chemistry with coach players but thats all part of why they need to change scenery,
Agreed with you on the core youth and commiting. Very excited on what were building here. Its been alot of pain but I think were only 2-3seasons away from making playoff noise.

Re: Stewart elite defense
Not saying Stewart is a bad defender but rim protection is only 1 aspect of defense and you need multiple metrics to capture defensive value. Not that I see a fit for Ayton here but he did hold his own against Joker in the playoffs and can guard in space...Stewart aint that.

Re: Stewart elite defense
Actually, for those with concerns about Stewart playing the four:
His handle (for a PF) is actually quite solid. His defense on the perimeter and on drives is good. He moves his feet really well for a big guy.
But yeah, his hands are not good at all. He can’t create jumpers off the dribble, they’re going to be assisted, so he needs to catch passes better. He’s struggled receiving it in the post, and he’s struggling with receiving on the perimeter.
Not sure there’s a whole lot to be done about it. Drills, certainly, but some guys just have better hands than others.
