NBA Board Of Governors To Discuss In-Season Tournament

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Jul 11, 2022 9:22 pm

The NBA will discuss adding an in-season tournament during Tuesday's board of governors meting.

Adam Silver has been pushing for the tournament for several years and has been met with resistance to date.

Talks have centered on an in-season tournament that would begin with pool play as part of the regular-season schedule prior to teams with the best records advancing to an eight-team, single-elimination tournament expected to culminate before Christmas.

The regular season could also decrease from 82 to 78 games with the in-season tournament.

The sides had discussed a purse of $1 million per player for the winning team, and the players would likely see more financial and competitive incentives before an agreement on the format might be reached.

Not a comment in 4 hours. Literally nobody cares about this idea.

By the way... great idea driving players to the better teams for the million dollars to help add more cap circumvention.

Can't wait for the 1st superstar to blow out a knee for a meaningless money grab cash prize tournament and cost him and his team a chance at a ring.

It would be cool if it was for a non-tradeable draft pick or something, say the 10th pick, and only last year's lotto teams are eligible or something. The positive thing about these types of tournaments is that it gives players that don't get to play in the playoffs every year a chance to shine on a national stage.

I’ve been watching basketball since 1985. Should this “idea” come to fruition, my time as a fan will come to a close.

This is nothing more than a gimmick. It does absolutely nothing to enhance the game or improve the product. The sole purpose here is more $$ for the league.

This is the least relevant argument possible. They are playing regular season basketball games anyway. Do injuries become more likely because they change the name to a "tournament game"?

I don’t get people’s resistance to new ideas. I’ve also been a tan for my entire life, and I would not stop watching because they tried a new idea. Even more, I am not against any new idea that doesn’t drastically change what I do like about the sport. This tournament is not changing anything important like the playoffs, so why be so mad about it?

I say go for it. Give it a try, if it doesn’t work then cancel it. What’s the harm?

If nobody is watching, is it still a national stage?

I don't see the point of this. Keep it the way it is and keep doing the play in tournament at the end of the season.

This is a TERRIBLE idea. If they really want something like this to work, then they should have the winning team increase lottery odds or something like that. Taking 4 games off the schedule to make room for a meaningless tournament is dumb because all the good teams will rest their players because of the unnecessary injury risk. I can't imagine why Silver thinks this is a good idea, yet won't try to get rid of intentional fouling...

Agree, and it begs the question if fans actually would rather watch a mid season tourney at the expense of 4 less regular season games from the team they love. What if your team wins the tourney then misses playoffs by 1 game?

I would say the injuries are just as likely, so many teams won't play their top players in these meaningless games. It will most likely be all young guys like summer league.
