If you think Donovan Mitchell will ever be the #1 option on a championship team you’re on a very lonely island. Nobody in the league thinks this.
I didn't say he would be but at this point I prefer to go this route. If not, what are we doing? With Brunson we have now been taken out of the lottery, so what's the plan? Stay mediocre for the next 5 years and hope we draft Giannis in the 15-20 range? I don't like those odds.
I would have been totally cool with tanking PROPERLY like teams like HOU/ORL/DET, etc. But our FO never intended to do that. So knowing they don't want to go the draft route, what other moves can be made to take a few huge steps forward? Wait for the next Mitchell to come available? We've been talking about the Zions/Lavines/Beals for YEARS and look what happened. Also, he wants to be here which is something to be said for in its own right.
Bottom line is this. It doesn't matter what I think or want, because Leon Rose and Dolan want this. Rose knows this is his opportunity to do what he promised when he signed up with us. He also knows that 2-3 more years of losing won't be tolerated in NY, and he'll be on the job market.
The plan is not to trade all your assets for a guy who isn’t taking you to the Finals. That should be the ultimate plan.
Star players come available every offseason.
But for people with a need for instant satisfaction this trade will work well for you. You’ll be serenading this 8th seed team until they’re rebuilding again in 5 years with nothing to show for it. I guess the satisfaction of a few exciting plays and some playoff wins at the Garden for a couple games a year will be enough. It won’t for me, but that’s just how I feel personally. I don’t believe in celebrating teams with limited ceilings.

All of a sudden a great vet (and really good player) in Derrick Rose becomes a lot more valuable as a bench piece on this squad w/Mitchell. I hope we keep DRose.

If the price really jumped up to 7!! first round picks and young talent, then you just move on. And I want Mitchell. Tell Ainge to eat a d*ck at that point

Spida's agent probably told Shams of the talks between NYK and Utah getting serious... Ainge probably told Woj what to say. Hence, the dichotomy.

Foreal. Too good to be true
Y’all missing the “other players” part where it could’ve still been a glut of young players ?
I'm assuming "other players" would mean fillers like Reddish, Fournier.

To be clear, this is what Fischer reported was the Jazz's initial offer on Tuesday night. NY balked but came with a significant counter offer and now it seems like a staring contest.

The Vo Show wrote:D1SGRUNTL3D wrote:The Vo Show wrote:I just can't get on board for trading for D Mitch... it just seems like a bad trade waiting to happen. First, Ainge is just the worst to deal with. He picks on desperation like no one else. Second, we've seen this with Melo. To all the people who say we should have built a better team around Melo and also want to do this trade, how do you build a team with no cap space and no trade assets?
Our cap space is going towards Brunson, RJ, Robinson, and D Mitch (and to a lesser extent Randle). Those guys are gonna be here for 3-4 years eating up about 90+% of the cap. That leaves us with about 5m and a MLE to sign the rest of the team. Also, we'll have 0 draft picks to trade to get better. So we're gonna just max out on a best case perennial second round exit ala 2000's-2010's Pacers? If we are hell bent on this trade, I'm shipping out RJ and Obi and IQ to save on some draft picks so we can improve the roster down the road.
So I’ll ask you this, what’s the plan? Im not a Knicks fan but I’ve been glued to this active thread since shams’ late night tweet. We know as is, Knicks are a late lottery or play in type team. Great. Zero chance at lottery luck and a slightly bigger chance at getting a star in the teens. With 28 draft picks in the next X amount of the years, are the Knicks planning on filling out the roster with a bunch of role players like they’ve done since melo left?
As a fan of a team that’s had countless top 5 picks since 2010 and only 2 are still with the team(ironically the 2 are from lotto luck), it’s more than just getting the luck.Half of the Knicks top 10 picks since 2015 don’t even play on your team since drafting KP. NBA landscape changes literally every year. I mean at least with Mitchell, you’ll have a bit of an identity. I wouldn’t give up more than we gave up for gobert because I think Rudy’s better but it’s a start.
I’d almost rank your draft history as bad as ours. But Stay down this current path of below level mediocrity
My plan would be to stay the course and develop the young players and continue drafting. Then consolidate the talent for a star at some point. I'm fine with trading for a star and shipping out 3-4 picks to get one but giving up 6 picks and all our assets for a top 20 to top 15 player who plays a position that is similar to a guy we signed 2 weeks ago seems like a bad idea. If we didn't sign Brunson and didn't have to give up essentially 9 picks between picks and youth, then go ahead. But given the current situation, locking yourself into 4 years of RJ, Randle, Mitch, Robinson and Brunson seems like a 5th seed with no draft picks and no assets.
On top of that, no one should trade with Ainge. He thinks so highly of himself that he can walk away from "fair" deals to gamble on getting lopsided trades in his favor. To that, I say, **** him. He thinks he holds all the leverage in this deal, but in reality, he holds 0 leverage. Time is on our side; Knicks should be in no rush whatsoever. Meanwhile, DMitch on Utah is terrible for Ainge's tank and rebuild plan. His best case scenario is what, DMitch plays great and holds value and diminishes his tank or does DMitch mail it in since he wants out and then loses value along the way?
Agreed, lets see what we got with Obi, IQ, and Grimes....out atleast 2 out of 3 of them. This could turn into an Afernee Simons situation if one of those 3 proves to be way more than a mere role player. Simons was often mentioned in a bunch of trade rumors before he blew up.

More Fish:
-Someone high ranking in the Knicks org told him that the two teams had very advanced discussions recently but the Jazz are playing hardball (he said it was like KD with the Nets) and holding out for more
- Jazz supposedly asked the Knicks for at least 6 FRP's and he heard from one source it was 7 but they're open to negotiation
- One hurdle is the Jazz don't want to take back any long term salary so matching salaries will be difficult. It's unlikely Fournier or Randle are in the deal, likely Rose and a bunch of young players to match salaries which is what they've been discussing.
- Mentioned he's heard RJ and Herro are both looking for max deals.
- Thinks Mitchell haul may wind up being more than the KD return

This has been their plan all along. They have never thought of keeping all the kids and trying to win with them. Not a surprise at all, but it just shows you the mindset we're dealing with.
Trying to win with RJ/Obi/IQ/Grimes was never something they truly considered. This day was always going to come.
What day is that? Nothing has happened yet.
