How are you feeling after Summer League 2022?

Post#1 » by ORLMagicGirl15 » Fri Jul 15, 2022 8:31 pm

I know we have 1 more game on Saturday, 7-17-22, but I want to know how you guys are feeling about the rookies and the team? Taking summer league with a grain of salt, what can be gleam from what we’ve watched?

I found this if you guys were interested. It’s Isaac talking about his recovery and the draft picks. It’s like 30 seconds, so nothing profound.

PS: I am posting it here to talk about the team, do not derail this thread with rhetoric that we’ve all heard and talked about ad nausea.

What do we usually do after SL?

Stalk our players and see their " gaining 15lbs of muscle while losing 10lbs of fat"??? Or measuring to see if they grew an inch or 2?

Last year we had the Olympics and the year prior was a mess. Not sure how to get our basketball fix. I have been watching Paolo’s Duke games so far. I found full length videos on YouTube.

I didn’t look up any of the draft picks before the draft because I didn’t want to fall in love with a player and then be disappointed. So, I wanted to get to know who Paolo is as a player so I am watching his games. Cannot find full length games for Caleb though.

I'm feeling optimistic.
I believe starting the season we have 3 starters that will be top 20 at their positions.
Franz, Paolo and WCJ.

Fultz, at worst is a NBA level starter.

What can we get out of the rest of the roster? that is the question for me.

We have a few players that do one thing well, but also do at least 1 thing bad. Who learns and improves?

True. I’m looking forward to seeing if Suggs improved his 3 shot and if RJ can play the pg position better then he did at SL.

Trash.

The amount of talent playing now is disappointing.

We've got such a bloated roster that I really only had interest in seeing what Paolo and Houstan looked like. I was very pleased with both. Obviously, I see Paolo as the fulcrum of our team - as a #1 overall should be - and I think he's going to be ROY. I didn't really expect to see RJ, so that only made me lose the unfounded optimism I was developing for him. After drafting PB instead of Jabari, the glaring need for spot up shooters jumped to the forefront...so, re-signing Harris and Bamba made more sense (especially on great deals), drafting Caleb made sense (especially if he can really hit 3's), and watching RJ continue pounding on the "I'm a PG" door instead of trying to show his 3&D capabilities made me sense that he has no concept of where he might fit with this team.

Summer league is over...I'm ready to see Suggs and Fultz hitting 3's in an empty gym, so I can have hope that our backcourt can hang with and complement our exciting frontcourt. I'd still really like to see a trade, just to consolidate a handful of our truly promising "maybes" into another "probably" shooter. We have too many bodies, none are completely hopeless, but we can't develop 12 young guys at once...support the kingpins of this team. Suggs, in particular, is the guy I have my eye on. His rounding out his offensive game can determine our immediate and long-term trajectory. Either he's a big part or we're still missing the big piece where he's sitting.

So, it's "swole" videos, "Look, Isaac can walk now" videos, "20 3's in a row in an empty gym" videos, and trade rumors for me.

I’m a little bummed out that once again the Magic have zero desire to want to win anything. I feel this is how the entire season is going to go. Even though it is summer league, I wish the Magic would want to be the champions of summer league just to say “hey we won the summer league”

When I played in summer league tournaments (baseball) even though it wasn’t the real season, we played to win because we were all competitive- even though the games didn’t mean anything, it was just the nature of us wanting to be the best and win. I don’t see that same mind set or desire with this summer league team to want to win which is a huge turnoff to me

they're definitely coaching and playing to win...it's just a matter of who is out there. Summer League is a tool for FO's. A glorified AAU gift to fringe players...no relationship to what our NBA team has in the works.
