Questions about former Nuggets

Post#1 » by winforlose » Fri Jul 15, 2022 7:20 am

Hi guys, I am a wolves fan, and as you may know we signed Austin Rivers and Bryn Forbes. I know I can get individual information about each in their respective threads. Instead I wanted to ask about them as pair. I just have a few quick questions and would appreciate any info or insight you can provide. Thanks in advance.

1. Did they ever share the floor together?

2. If they were to play together do you think Rivers could function at PG with Forbes as SG on offense?

3. If they play together do you think the pairing is a significant defensive liability?

Can't really remember about 1, but if they did share the floor together it was nothing to get excited about. Rivers was never asked to be a pg during his time on the Nuggets, maybe it's not completely outside of what he's capable of, but don't think you'd want him in that role. Forbes is definitely a significant defensive liability, if he's shots are not falling in, he shouldn't be on the floor.

I was more wondering if Rivers could cover for Forbes, or at least hide him. Rivers is a good defender?

He can be a decent/ok defender, but not exactly 1st team all-defense - he's a deep bench guy on a minimum contract, so don't expect too much. Anyway, main thing about Forbes is whether he hits his threes, if yes then he should be alright in the regular season (not exactly a playoffs guy), if he's missing he's a waste of space since he doesn't really do much else.

Most Nuggets fans had some moderate expectations for both, but in reality Rivers really only impacted one game and Forbes flamed out in the playoffs when we needed him. So, hope TC's dream is still alive.

I am not even sure either will be in the rotation. We only sent out 3 players from last season and we had 11 getting minutes. Gobert and Anderson are both replacing Beverly and V8. Nowell replaces Beasley. My guess is Rivers is our 3rd string PG and Forbes our 3rd string SG. I was just curious how the two of them function together.

When they played together Rivers was usually playing SF, they were never on the court together otherwise. In the regular season they looked pretty good, but a lot of that was moving Bones to PG and putting Campazzo on the bench as well as having Cousins at Center. Our bench was terrible but people forget we lost 3 forwards and the only true 2/3 for significant time last year, but had 5 PGs (including Rivers) and 5 PFs on the roster last. Forbes basically lost his place in the rotation by the playoffs, and Rivers only really had 1 good playoff game, but our bench and our perimeter defense were terrible last year.

The thing is they should never be used together. You are talking 3rd string guys, how good do you think veteran 3rd stringers are? Without the injuries we probably never trade for Forbes, and Rivers would have been a spot player when guys get in foul trouble or when you need another defender for a few minutes. Forbes is a streaky guy who can get off a few shots to spread the floor. Used right they have their roles, but neither are capable of much more than that.

Just checked and got surprised that Bryn's 3p% with the Nuggets was 41%. Not sure why, but it felt much worse than that watching him in the games

This was my understanding as well, but I didn’t get to see many of your games last year, and rather simply assume, I wanted to ask and confirm. Rivers strikes me as a SG not a PG. 3rd string is probably where he will be, and probably where he belongs. Forbes is a sharpshooter but not much else. The spacing he gives you comes at the cost of the defense and rebounding you give up when you use him. That said, both guys are on one year vet minimum deals, and as far as 3rd string goes I think we could do worse.

His career average is barely 2 as, don't think anyone has him as a PG

Rivers and Forbes is a pretty good 3rd line for the wolves.

Is it really possible that they could use 2 way for nugs on PJ Dozier?

Looks like we are targeting Cousins as well. Can anyone tell me about Cousins defense? TimberNuggets might actually run Rivers, Forbes, and Cousins at the same time, kinda fun ;)

He's a big guy/clogs the paint and gets rebounds too. That's about it.

Can he play drop? Can he switch onto 4s with any kind of success? Is he foul prone?

Foul prone I'd say yes, especially prone to technical fouls, top 5 in the league even though he played less than 50 games last season. Probably would've been no 1 if he played the full season. He's big and not very fast at this point in career so wouldn't count on him guarding smaller guys, unless it's around the basket.

He can barely keep up with 5s. Defense was never his calling card and now he came back from a career ending injury.
