While a triple or quadruple OT can be a bit meh in the regular season they are some of the most exciting games in the playoffs. Nothing like both teams busting their ass trying to do everything to win the game it's unreal.

I also love the fatigue factor in the playoffs, where the star players already see more minutes who still has fuel in the tank to produce in OT, 2nd OT, or 3rd OT.

So this rule is garbage, at best it should be implemented in the regular season only, I would hate sudden death in a game where scoring is so damn easy. It's far harder to score in sports where sudden death is more common which makes it more feasible.

I could understand sudden death after maybe 3 OTS... The 4th OT becomes sudden death. At some point fatigue sets in and injury risk increases as players get exhausted from playing. I agree that it could chance back for playoff ball, but for regular NBA action make the 4th OT sudden death. Would likely only come up once every few years anyways. Four OT games have only happened 9 times since 1980.

Keep in mind when the Blazers played a 4th OT game against Denver in the playoffs a few years back that was the first one since the late 50's in the playoffs.

Games that go beyond a 2nd OT period are Super rare, most fans will only see their team play in a few that go beyond that in their entire lifespan, this assumes they watch every game. I don't understand the change over something that occurs so rarely in the NBA, it's not like dealing with issues that matter a lot more and happen more frequently.

Yeah, no.

Sudden death works for sports like hockey or soccer because relatively few goals are scored, so there's an ebb and a flow to the game outside of just scoring.

Basketball isn't like that at all. The ebb and flow IS the scoring in a much more vital way than in other sports. Having a sudden death overtime would frequently just come down to 'who won the jump ball', and that benefits absolutely nobody.

If you really want to avoid games going into 3OT, then just allow ties. It's not a GOOD solution, but it's better than sudden death. Or make it just one overtime, and have the first team to score X (maybe 7, 11, or 15) points gets the win.

But 'Next basket wins' is just bad mojo for basketball.
