Also, in what world would Brunson and Mitchell be a bad backcourt ?

Superstar ?

In what world 2 small guards that arent known for defense will be a bad backourt ? Dame + CJ 2.0, but with less talented guys

So what if they aren’t known for their defense ? They’re dynamic, high level offensive players. With Thibs at the helm, we can potentially see them play the best defense of their careers thus far, and even then it’s not like they’re the worst defenders ever. Strong defenders elsewhere on the team can shore up their shortcomings and compensate.

That’s a weird statement to make about CJ/Lillard, as whatever shortcomings the Blazers had didn’t fall on their shoulders — it was mostly because the roster AROUND those two wasn’t up to par, typically. So with having Mitchell and Brunson, even if they’re not the duo Lillard/CJ was (which I think is a bit reductionist to say on the surface of it), the Knicks success would also depend on how the pieces around them fit and complement them.

And yes, I’d say at the very least he’s flirting with being a superstar offensively, factoring in his strong postseason runs in 2020 and 2021. 26/5 on a little north of league average efficiency in the RS the past two years on a Utah team that had the 3rd and 1st rated offense in those years as well (with Spida being 7th in ORPM in both years). So yeah, I’ll stand on that superstar comment.

Take it from someone who watched two small guards with no defense play together in the starting unit: it never goes well. Ever. Getting two great scoring players while disregarding the other critical aspects of the game never goes well.

onovan Mitchell and Brunson together will be a Lillard and Mccollum reboot but worse....

But some Knicks fans would be fine giving up 6 FRP for onovan Mitchell who isn't even a superstar and cant guard a garbage can....

Who's to say he doesn't force Danny's hand and say I will only play for new york?...players seem to have all the power now

You think Mitchell is forcing Ainge hand.. what Mitchell Gonna do, he ain’t got no power. hold out and get fined millions and piss off a vindictive mf’er like DA, who will fine him for years.

At what point was Danny ever vindictive while being gm of the celtics? Am I missing something here? Didn't we just witness Simmons hold out, and took massive fines just to get out of the team he didn't want to play for?....he didn't pick a team to play for, but he didn't care. He just wanted out. In this case I Think Mitchell has made it clear he wants to play for the Knicks. Yes players have all the power now....where have u been living, Under a rock these past couple years? I hate that the players have this much power, but it is what it is

Surpassing the Gobert return for Mitchell would be a mistake...but I'll wait to criticize this FO until they actually make the mistakes that they have been speculated to be planning, cause so far what they've done has been reasonable for a team that ownership will not allow to tank.

Hopefully they're doing their due diligence but will not give up what Ainge is probably demanding. Let's see how these kids look with a competent PG running things, cause our trade bait might look a lot more enticing in 6-9 months.

Because there’s no salary cap in MLB which means there’s no reason for the Mets or Yankees to build from the ground up when maybe only the Dodgers have the resources to compete with them as far as bidding for stars. Now of course there’s the competitive balance tax but the largest markets will go over that if it means contending every year. If there were no salary cap in the NBA the Knicks probably would’ve had multiple titles by now.

I hope that I’m not coming across like I think they’ll be the best backcourt ever or anything, but despite their size I think they’ll be successful and productive — particularly offensively. I’m familiar with some undersized backcourts myself, and while it isn’t ideal, it can be pulled off to some moderate-high level success.

FVV/Lowry as a 6’1 backcourt duo comes to mind in recent memory. In 2019, FVV started 28 games, Lowry 65 (I’d imagine most weren’t overlapping, to be fair) but either way they did play big minutes next to one another into the postseason and through to a championship. The following season they started together, won 53 games and lost in 7 games in the second round to Boston.

Mitchell/Conley were fairly successful together in 3 years or so (good-great RS records, a second round appearance). Even felt like overall they underachieved. But long story short, I don’t disagree that their size is an uphill battle, but I think it can be managed/mitigated with the right pieces/coaching.

Donovan Mitchell is a top 25 player entering his prime. Acting like the Knicks are stuck in a loop of acquiring players of this caliber and messing it up is silly. The last time they acquired someone of this caliber was Carmelo Anthony over 10 years ago. Melo might not have made the Knicks true contenders again but they were relevant making the playoffs 3 seasons in a row including one season where they were the 2nd seed in the East. Knicks should most definitely trade for Mitchell and then they need to do what they failed to do with Melo and give him another 1 or 2 stars in their prime.

I don't think it's going to work, but Mitchell is better. You don't say no to Mitchell because you have Brunson. If it doesn't work, you trade Brunson in a year or two... but will Rose have the balls to do it? That's another story.

FVV and Lowry were both elite defenders. That’s an entirely different situation from a duo that isn’t even decent at that end. It’s not a matter of whether or not they are productive, it’s a matter of whether or not it will work. And if they are being horribly exposed defensively, then guess what? It isn’t working.

They're trying to keep Mitchell, if they can get that package in and pay 3 firsts or less thats a win honestly. That 6 pick nonsense sounds like the thing that got Ainge ran out of Boston (sort of) in the first place though.

If the Knicks were willing to give up 6 picks this deal would have been consummated. Clearly NY isn't buying at Ainge's price.

Brunson will be better than Mitchell as soon as next season.

none of the young talent or future young talent via draft picks will make a difference if Thibs is the coach. So might as well get a 25 y/o cornerstone. They've already screwed up the rebuild several times over these past decades. What they haven't done is get a young star player before his prime.

Oh I agree, in retrospect I was using the "generation" term too loosely.

It would be more accurate to say that Mitchell will be the best Knick since Melo.
