Will Carmelo Anthony Legacy Significantly Improve with Time?

Post#1 » by Wigginstime » Mon Jul 18, 2022 9:52 pm

I watch the comparison board a lot and generally Carmelo Anthony performs horrible on all comparison topics. In the last year i've seen people generally agree that all of the following players are better than Anthony:

Tracy McGrady
Ray Allen
Reggie Miller
Gary Payton
Paul Pierce
Jason Kidd
Chris Paul
Paul George
Jimmy Butler
Jayson Tatum
Chauncey Billups
etc

I get Melos Career had a rough decline but why is everyone so dismissive of his accomplishments. Will we really look back and remember someone like Paul George or Jimmy Butler as superior to Melo?

When looking at career accomplishments can you really justify a case for Butler or PG13 as better player than Melo?

Melo:
Top 10 all time scorer with 28,000 career points
3 Gold Olympic Medals
NBA Scoring Champion
NCAA national champion
10x NBA all star

PG13
15000 career points
7x NBA all star

Butler
12000 career points
6x NBA all star
2 NBA finals losses

Every season the Knicks don't get past the second round his stock in theory should improve.

Most wins since the Ewing era. Only guy to steal MVP vote from peak LeBron. Eliminated prime CP3 And Dirk, faced Kobe in the WCF. Higher career high than LBJ.

I think what he did prior to his regression 2014-2018 is underappreciated

I doubt people in the future will increasingly appreciate relatively inefficient scorers who didn't bring much else to the table.

To me, he was more deserving of Rookie of the Year than Lebron. That was the only time they were on the same level.

I've heard it through the grapevine..NBA gods have already designated Los Angeles LAKERS as NBA Champions in near future. The destiny is real. TRUST ME.

Anthony will be viewed the exact same way Dominique Wilkins is in about 10 years, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Same type of player.

the man took a 5 year deal in denver when everyone else was doing 3. forced his way to new york, dismantling all their assets when the knicks could have just signed him outright with a few moves. Then proceeded to sign 2 deals with the worst franchise in the nba.

his image would have been better if he actually demonstrated he was attempting to win a championship.

I think the average fan will forget about him real fast if he doesnt seek a media job post career...

And the only reason "he" beat prime Dirk was the reason that he had the way better team around him and every non Dirk Mav choked.
Dirk Nowitzki averaged 34.4 points, 11.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 5 games versus the Nuggets in the 2009 Western Conference Semifinals.
Carmelo Anthony averaged 30.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 5 games versus the Mavericks in the 2009 Western Conference Semifinals.

28k points and no jersey retirement anywhere

Not unless he goes to a title contender, and contributes off the bench.

2008-09 Nuggets should have won the series vs the Lakers (they were much better in Game 1 and somehow lost this game, due to Carter inbound), then in Game 3 they lost close game again due to inbound. It was the only time Melo played on contender.

He's already viewed as a GOAT-level player so I don't see how it possibly could

I was in this camp during their first year, there was a fairly large contingent of fans that agreed, no matter how few admit to it now.

OP, you're asking if 2 way players are better than 1 way players? Yes, obviously.

Melo is known for being a scorer, who didn't do it on great efficiency, doesn't facilitate for his teammates, negative defender, and honestly probably not as good of a rebounder as someone his size should be.

The guy always went for the money, it's the same narrative Beal has to look forward to.

I don't think so

One of the few times he could have tried to 'build his legacy' was in 2014 and join Rose/Gasol, but opted to stay with the Knicks

He's better than Tatum (which will probably change at some point) and somewhat close to Billups and Paul George. He's obviously more talented than Reggie Miller and Jimmy Butler but those two guys are "gamers" with a knack for the big moment.. Melo doesn't have enough moments. I don't think he should be viewed as better than any of the other players you mentioned.
