Smart.
This kind of deal should be what stars go for. It is a contingency when they are older and may not have income or endorsement at that age.
Some want the big 100s of million of dollars upfront, sure this type are great if you want to invest that to another business interest. But if you are the chill type who just wants to live comfortably... structure sponsorship contracts that pay less upfront but spread out a longer term and a balloon payment to end the contract... stars would have money coming in at their middle age years... can be very handy.
Idk if it's smart but it's better than the utter incompetence when athletes go broke.
Might depend on the contract but I would hope the money isnt just sitting/devaluing over the decades
Well, tbh if you are dumb enough to go broke after an income stream that pays you millions of dollars for years, there is a good chance this doesn't help as much either. If you live a lifestyle that millions of dollars can't afford, those few hunded thousands a year (that you also have to pay taxes on), are rather a drop on a hot stone (do you say this in English?). And even the 32 Mio. to close the contract might already by used by loans that you take to afford your lifestyle knowing this money will come sooner or later.
IMO, anybody who is business-savy would choose the money now over the money later. Cause then you can make the money work for you. By the time the 32 Mio. USD hit your account, they are probably worth only 16 Mio. USD were in your playing days.

On T-Mac: I can see why he was still under contract: to ensure not losing out had his brand evolved like MJ's did so adidas did sign him long-term. But since that didn't happen, adidas has no benefit in keeping to pay him and also entertaining the relationship. Heavily doubt T-Mac's face is still selling sneaker in a major way. I haven't seen his face in ads in years, not even in his end of career playing days anymore.
Gotta admit though, his sneakers were awesome, especially the T-Mac 2.
