They were cheap with Harden, but had the 3rd highest payroll in 2015/2016 in the league. If KD decided to stay they would been top 5 in team salary for many more years.

Because they did match Ayton.

Also, they previously built one of the best health/training groups in the league.

You might as well call the Kings owner the GM, since he seems to want to meddle at any opportunity. If you watch the shorter clip of the Stauskus thing it doesn't show the full story.

Sarver is cheap as heck and MJ may also meddle at this level, but the Kings owner seems absolutely clueless about what makes a good NBA player and despite that he still meddles. I would personally trust MJ as a GM over the Kings owner.

I’m failing to see the issue in that video. Even before the owner comes in they were already debating Smart vs Stauskas and seemed to like both. Ultimately they wanted to trade up to get Embiid and the owner allowed that attempt, but Phili said no. Smart then was off the board. Ultimately they took Stauskus, but there was nobody else mentioned that everybody seemed to want over Stauskus. Kings ownership may be bad, but I just don’t see how that video demonstrated it.

On top of that on the board you can see the GM's ranking which had Stauskas high before Vivek comes in the picture

For years this has been assumed that Vivek made the decision when there is nothing but happenstance to show that

Ehh. The video shows Pete D (still hated in Sac) asking absurdly unprepared questions the day of. Should we try to trade up for Embiid? Uhhhh….shouldn’t he have figured that out weeks ago? Lots of RealGM posters are more prepared than that.

And when decision time comes and they are on the clock Vivek is the one that states it should be Nik first, and Pete D then agrees like a cowering puppy afraid of getting hit for peeing on the floor.

Oh, then Pete D slime-bags Nik by saying didn’t we tell you that you were coming to Sac. Dude is a moron and asshat. There are cameras that just recorded him trying to trade up and their selection not being fully decided literally while they are on the clock.

No, it doesnt show anything like that. Vivek comes at the end and is supportive of Stauskas, but for all we know that was the FO pick and Vivek and others were voicing their support

That’s an incredibly generous -for Vivek- take on that video.

I get editing. But it’s clear they were floundering up until they are on the clock and then Vivek stamps it and PeteD withers like the spineless POS he is.

MJ has always said he will pay well into the tax when the team is a contender....sadly we've never come close to that point. Rich Cho set the franchise back a while

It's also super clearly staged for the videorgapher. No idea what was actually happening with that draft since what we saw was obviously just set up for some Vivek vanity project.

(Also someone was going to take Stauskas in the lotto that year, it really wasn't an astoundingly terrible pick or anything. He was just a bust, his major strengths didn't translate well (like many people) and that left his secondary skills pretty meaningless. Happens to a few players every year, Kings should've hedged a little more but it wasn't like they reached or like that pick was insane.)

Yet Pete has the upper hand to deny the trade back to 10 when they are on the clock?

And do you believe a typical FO wouldnt have hashed the Stauskas/Payton debate way before they are on the clock?

Without knowing too much beyond public perception (so could be wrong but team results seem to back it up) I'd go Knicks and Kings off the top of my head.

Shouldn’t be a debate at that point. It should be a series of trade contingencies and a draft board. All variables accounted for, hell I do this as a random NBA fan of the Kings. It has to all be mapped out. Otherwise you’re just schmucks winging it. Which is clearly the case.

Kings ownership is definitely bad. McNair had had 3 good drafts with Halliburton, Mitchell and Murray it seems. Hopefully we stay the course with him and make a playoffs before we move on again.

I agree with the entire sentiment. Which is why I'd leave open the idea that it was already known the Kings would like Stauskas over Payton, and Vivek was just there to parrot the consensus choice and offer moral support

Watching the video, it’s in order. Yes, there are edits but in crunch time it’s in order of events. Vivek asks Stauskas or Payton. Then he says “for me Stauskas.” Vivek was using “we” just minutes earlier around the Philly deal for ten and Pete using I. When crunch time comes Vivek says “for me.” They don’t have a preset agreement. It’s each for their own. Vivek big dogs Pete, and Pete folds. Vivek literally stands up and pulls up his paints. It’s a landslide. There is one true final decision maker in that room, and it ain’t Pete and he knows it as does everyone else. Watch Mulllin and his BS opportunistic ass buttering up Viveck immediately after. It’s all gross. Pete D is not a man/human with any integrity. He is a shill.

And in the end they did not spend that. They paid 61 million in tax after cutting everything they could to get it as lean as they could, spending about 200 million, then ripping it all down quickly the following season.

I see little wrong with the list with the exception of the spurs being on it. OKC might be a slight outlier, might not. I would add a few other teams. No point starting an argument with their fans and adding those to this post but they don't have great ownership.

George even resigned with them when everybody "knew" it was not going to happen.

It kinda turned me off as a fan and I'm sure it sucks to hear this but a lot of the bad owners in sports (not just nba) ruin the fan culture in general. Here is my list of NBA teams who will never win a championship IN FUTURE due to bad ownership:

1.) NY Knicks - Dolan
2.) OKC Thunder - market and ownership doing bare minimum
3.) Orlando Magic - ownership never keeps stars (Shaq, Penny, Dwight)
4.) Houston Rockets - Fertitta
5.) Sacramento Kings - Vivek
6.) Indiana Pacers - market and ownership not caring about winning
7.) Charlotte Hornets - market and never keeping stars/young talent
8.) San Antonio Spurs - ownership situation and market attractability
this is an incredibly dumb list.
Having OKC, Houston and especially SAS there is just comical, given their recent history.

Leonsis, Vivek and jordon. These are the only owners who severly limit the potential for their teams to contend.

read the post, it says FUTURE. this isn't dealing with the past. For example, Houston has a new owner who by all accounts, is the worst owner in the NBA and super cheap to the point where he is scared to touch the luxury tax. This is what I mean by moving FORWARD Into the FUTURE.

sure, why even try to aknowledge what happened for real when predicting what will happen using words like "for sure"?

People generally love living in the Phoenix area so there’s always going to be a market for them, and despite the Ayton pick, they’re not all that bad when it comes to drafting. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them back in the finals at some point in the next couple of years.
