I'm in the camp of signing him to a Hauser type deal and get Juhann Begarin's NBA career started. Let him learn everyday from Tatum and Brown. Of course there is about 1,000 reasons why you don't do this (needs playing time, brings free agency closer, needs to work on his skills etc.) but what the heck let's do it.

I'm not opposed. I felt he was better than huaser or kornet so if they got a deal then I feel he and Justin Jackson do too

There were a couple very sharp scouts I trust on Twitter who felt Begarin was one of the best players at VSL outside the elite rookies like Banchero/Chet.

If he doesn't come over, is he going back to France for another year? I feel that could just as likely stall his development as coming over into a minutes logjam would.

The hope would be that one of the top european clubs were impressed with his summer league and we can get him on top team overseas.

On the one hand, waiting a year to start the clock on a 4 year rookie contract is a bonus. On the other, going up against and learning from Smart, Brogdon, JB etc. at age 19 seems to be a better way to instill proper work ethic and habits to get him where he needs to be. I hope he gets a roster spot.

INM, it's a two-year contract before he becomes RFA since he's a 2nd rounder and we don't have cap space or MLE to sign him to a longer contract.

So it's RFA in 2024 if we give Bergarin a regular spot now vs. RFA in 2027 if we can give him a small portion of the MLE next offseason.

Ok so Begarin had a bunch of highlight reel dunks, played solid D and averaged 18 PPG at summer league.

Question is, has anyone averaged 18 PPG with good D across 5 summer league games and NOT at least gotten a 2-way contract?

I get it, he's still only 19 (turns 20 soon though) and we're a veteran team trying to win a ring so might not make sense to have a 19/20 yr old rookie on the team and feel like you gotta give him mins in order to keep his development going.

But on the other hand, this guy may have earned a roster spot.

I feel like Brad probably wasn't expecting Begarin to do as well as he did this year at summer league. I think he just assumed Begarin was gonna go back to Europe for another year.

But Udoka was quoted the other day saying we need to add another wing - is Begarin that guy? Give him a chance to earn some real mins, get him in there practicing everyday with Tatum, Brown, Brogdon, Smart and White. Iron sharpens iron.

It didn't really work out with Nesmith or Langford but Langford had tons of injuries and he also didn't seem like he wanted it that bad, seemed too casual, not determined enough. Nesmith - a lot of people have said that he was overrated going into the draft because his hot shooting in college was on a small sample size of games, mostly vs easy non-conference opponents so there were these unrealistic expectations on him as a lottery pick, he wasn't able to shoot like people thought he could and then his confidence started to clearly suffer.

Who knows, maybe it'll be different with Begarin. He seems like a really mature, poised dude with good mental toughness and physical toughness. He seems to want it really bad, seems determined, plays really hard and also seems to have good confidence out there.

We just gotta keep working with him on his shooting but he's already showing some improvement there - from 30.9% from 3 and 56% FT this past season in France to 33.3% from 3 and 76% FT in summer league. Obviously that's only 5 SL games but I think it's clear that he has been putting in the work to. get better. And again, he's more likely to keep improving that show with our coaches than overseas.

If everyone is healthy and it's looking like he's not getting minutes. Whatever, he can go to Maine, play in some games there, get some reps, get some shots up. Stay in rhythm. Anyone can be assigned to g-league, you don't have to be on a 2-way. But if we do have some injuries then boom, Begarin can slide in and start getting his first real NBA game action, cut his teeth - I think if he gets the chance, he could start making an impact out there - especially during the 2nd half of the season. He might be kind of bad during the 1st half of the season - but I think by 2nd half of the season things will start to click, he'll get more comfortable and he'll be making some plays out there.

Two Way was NEVER an option with Begarin because he can get way more than that in France, which is a language he actually speaks.

The issue is probably for how much and how much guaranteed. There are standard 2nd Round contracts but there is no limit like there is on 1rst Round deals.

Begarin ain't taking a Kornet deal ($100,000 guaranteed) or a Hauser deal ($300,000 guaranteed) where those guys can be cut loose before Christmas if someone better comes along.

Personally I think it makes more sense to let him develop with the Celtic coaching and training staff and scrimmaging against the guys instead of sending him back to Europe. But he ain't begging for a contract, so the Celtics are going to have to STEP UP, which I believe that they will. Begarin is easily the best defender of all the summer league players.

Cs can only offer him the minimum since they don't have cap space and they already used all of the TP-MLE on Gallinari.

Makes more sense for him and the team that he spend another year overseas.

So minimum for someone with 0 years experience is $1,017,781 plus per diem for 41 away games plus training camp money.

a 19 yr old kid who is playing for a team that is only in its first season in France's A division probably isn't making $1 mil in a year..

You can tell his goal is to play in the NBA. He'd probably make (slightly) more here. And he's arguably better than every wing in the organization besides Tatum/Brown. He might get a rookie deal. We'll see..

He doesn't need to waste another year in Europe. The kid is ready to contribute. Does anyone know what he was making last year in France?

I tried to look it up but couldn't find anything. Hard to find accurate salary info for overseas players. I'm assuming more than $500K but definitely less than $1 mil..

I agree that he could be ready to contribute now. At least bring him to training camp and see how he looks compared to Hauser/Thomas/Jackson/Ryan.

Likely in france his salary sucks and doesnt reach 500k, however players on a good team in ACB get 500k o more, some of them get over 1m, the top players 1-3m.

I think from both an asset preservation standpoint and developmental standpoint it makes more sense to keep him overseas for another year. You don't start the clock on his NBA contract in a year that he figures to not get any minutes and conversely he gets to play a ton against decent competition overseas. It just makes sense.

That being said if they can save a couple million by signing him as opposed to a guy on the veteran's minimum because of the tax implications I'm fine if they want to go that route. He looks like he could fill that emergency wing role that Nesmith was in. He's still super raw so I think he struggles to find minutes beyond that but if that's the case aim to have him in the G-League as much as possible.

It's not my money so I'd keep him overseas and hope he can sign on with a better team and develop against better competition and then bring him over next year. C's can easily get same output from another vet min guy.

RFA in 2024 vs. possibly RFA in 2027. From team control POV, it's a no-brainer to stash him another year.

Well, in France we dont show as transparently the wages. Just for information, the whole wages for Paris 2 yrs ago was 1.4 million a year, so i doubt Begarin is making more than 100k a year (with 55% taxes on top on that).
But again, for him the problem isnt the money. You arent looking a kid who needs to provide for his family (his cousin is a notable pro player in France), so we shouldnt see his spot in the roster as a money discussion, but more abt his role and his developpment.
As i mentionned on a diff topic here, Begarin spent the last yr talking with video assistant everyweek to go through his games play by play, to go through celtics game to envision already how he has to play. So, ultimately, his decison will be based on what path the celtics want to see him grow : in France with Paris playing Eurocup (2nd best european competition) and do better than last yr (Paris was saved to stay in first League the very last game) as a player (averages around 11pts, 4.5reb, 1.5ass 43% shot, 31% from 3pts, and 56% from FT).

I want him to come over here, but shouldnt forget he hasnt been drafted by the Magics, OKC or the Pistons, but by you guys that already have a winning team, so def harder to integrate him in the rotation. Over the last week i changed my mind and think he'll stay in Paris one last yr and shine ! Goals for him this yr statistically : more than 15pts, 5reb, 3ass, 1 block, 1 st and at least 45-40-70 or %. Plus he has to be on a winning team and have a better impact on the game !!! he def has wayyyy more confidence now than ever before, he needs to take advantage of his situation which is that he can make good mistakes and learn quick !!!
