Delonte West Interviewed by Good Morning America

Post#1 » by HomoSapien » Wed Jul 20, 2022 5:08 pm

Note 6/6/24: This thread/intreview is from 2022. It was bumped because Delonte was arrested again, as stated in post #13: viewtopic.php?p=113565550#p113565550

Apologies if this has been posted already, but thought I'd share since there's been ongoing interest in his story on this board.

Glad to see him doing pretty well. I hope he continues to thrive while getting any help and support he might need.

Unfortunately the NBA wasn't very sympathetic towards mental illness in his day. I watched a documentary on him where he was saying basketball was his escape and eventually he was just known as crazy Delonte which caused another bad downward spiral for him.

Lebron, being the warlock he is, put a hex on him for dating his mother imo.

They said they caught up with him this spring. Unfortunately, either in May or June there was a video of him panhandling in Virginia trending on twitter.

I feel for people with poor mental health. You really can't do anything in life when your mind has a different agenda. Hope he finds his way and keeps fighting.

Not a very insightful interview. Seemed to be more clips about him and others talking about him rather than him giving a thorough interview. Kind of disappointing if that was Good Morning America’s call, but I get it if he has an agent or PR guy that wanted to keep it a surface level interview.

It's actually awesome seeing West doing so well. A little while ago he was on the streets begging for cash.

Any word on if his step-son has been helping him out? He was just playing at the Drew League and played quite well. They should meet up. He'll be busy once the season starts, as he's in his 20th season already.

While drinking. That was like three weeks ago. Not exactly a great look given the substance abuse issues.

Delonte West was really good. Particularly the early Boston version before physical injuries and mental illness started sapping his career.

He was a small guard that didn't have much scoring game, but he was tough as nails, really underrated playmaker, and perfectly solid as an outside shooter. Really good defender at both guard positions, and even had the toughness to guard up a little bit.

He's a pretty extreme example of how people can have immense talent and gifts, but how inner struggles can still make it next to impossible to live in this world.

One can argue he was even better with the Cavs

He started for them and was having lebron plays ran for him.

I’m not sure if he has his moments with Boston but the cavaliers staff did a great job of hiding his off court moments until they couldn’t hide his arrest for the motorcycle guns incident

Mike brown decided to have him guard hedo turkoglu in the eastern finals for some reason

Not sure this is an NBA issue as much as a "societal" mindset that money fixes all problems. The general societal belief that If you are getting paid millions of dollars to do something you sure as hell better perform. Aka if the guy making $10 an hour can get out of bed to go flip burgers, there should be no reasons that someone getting paid millions can't get out of bed to dribble a basketball.

Unfortunately health doesn't care how wealthy you are and society isn't very forgiving although things have improved greatly in the last 10 years.

What's sad is, where are all his nba buddies? Why do I never hear about any one of them even reaching out to him, let alone help him? Look, Im sure Delonte is a handful. Im also sure every one of us has at least 1 friend that's like that. You keep ur distance in certain situations and keep a closer eye out on him depending on the circumstance - but you dont just flat out abandon the **** dude. A person at his lowest, darkest time of their life is usually when friends stop hanging around them. Ironically that's when he/she needs their friends the most.
