Sixers to build $1.3b Arena in Center City for 2031

Post#1 » by Slacktard » Thu Jul 21, 2022 1:39 pm

Read on Twitter

The arena, which will be located from 10th - 11th Streets and Market - Cuthbert Streets, is expected to be completed by 2031.

https://76place.com/

Says that it will be privately funded... Although I'm sure there will be some sort of city concessions.

The odd thing is how in the statement they talk about traffic 'congestion' leaving the Wells Fargo forcing fans to leave early. You wanna see traffic jams? Try having 7,500 to 10,000+ cars get to/leave this one spot. Assuming there are actual decent parking options for those vehicles.

I imagine the idea is that people won't be driving there since it's right next to Jefferson station.

Is it worth investing in a bar/restaurant nearby?

I'm into it and well past time we had an arena downtown. I hope this moves ahead.

Right, it couldn't be more central and walkable/public transit accessible. I like the idea.

Probably. Year round events will always have people in the area.

Hope it works out. It’s a good idea, that area has a lot of potential. Puts the Wells Fargo Center in a tough spot, guessing they’ll lose all the other basketball events, a lot of the shows and concerts and so on to a newer arena in CC.

I'll miss all the stadiums being together though. Since I only visit yearly, the public transit is really helpful

This is awesome. Finally a downtown arena instead of in the middle of nowhere.

Here in DC the neighborhood around the Cap One Area (Penn Quarter) is one of the most fun in the city.

I hate it. It's way too crowded and tight downtown and who knows what crime will be at this rate 10 years from now. If it continues to rise, last thing we want is thousands of people relying on public transportation to get to games.

Ive been calling out for them to build a new one years ago.

But this design isn’t nice for me. Im guessing this is just a proposal and not the final design

These kinds of projects can totally transform an area. When they built Cap One arena in DC's Chinatown/Penn Quarter, it was basically a crime-infested ghetto. Same with the Nats stadium on the SW Waterfront - turned a ghetto into an awesome and fun neighborhood.

Well past time Philadelphia got its act together and did something similar.

Gentrification is real.

Except this area of the city is nowhere near ghetto. But regardless, I like the idea. City needs something new and exciting

As usual in this city, most people not in favor are complaining about parking/traffic. This town is way too car-centric. I know SEPTA has issues (MAJOR issues), but asking people to not even consider taking their car somewhere around here is asking the world.

Eh, Wells will be alright. They had a nice run and get to squeeze another 10 years out of the ol golden goose.

Exactly. How do people in other cities go to games in downtown arenas? They take mass transit. This new arena looks like the perfect location for that.

If you live in the burbs, park at the station nearby and take the train into the city.

A mega-project like this is good incentive for the city to fix/improve mass transit.

It’s also not really a “dangerous” part of the city as it stands now either. I’ve walked around there pretty late at night and have generally felt safe. It’s just kind of dead and there’s not a lot going on. It has a lot of potential though which is why you kept seeing people invest in it.

It's not about the area in itself, it's people having to rely on public transportation to get there which is the bigger concern. But 2031 is years away, who knows what crime will be like in the city then. Regardless, I think it's a bad idea to try and pack in 20,000 people in such a cramped area such as downtown. Experiencing downtown is great. Getting there and leaving is never not a nightmare. I think the current situation of the sports complexes is the best in the country. A big open area that you can get to by public transportation or by car.

There's no way they do this without upgrading mass transit options. They'll have more trains, better security, running later hours. Assuming the transit situation will be as it is today is disingenuous.

And I couldn't disagree more about the current sports complex. They're in the middle of nowhere. There's no spillover benefits for the city. Going to games in cities with downtown arenas like NYC, DC, Boston, Chicago, etc. is such a better experience.
