Haha crazy how much of an outlier he is with the no 3 and no D, but good at everything else. Interesting to see this kind of role player. Probably limits the ceiling of his impact. Not convinced he will develop a shot but could happen.
If he doesn't improve those weaknesses/ become an off nsl threat hes probably best running a 2nd unit
And this was my point. I love Giddey and wanted him to fall to Memphis in the draft. He is probably the most elite at mapping the court I have ever seen and surpassing Jokic in this is quite the feat. I think his ultimate role on a championship team is akin to Magic on the Showtime Lakers where he defends the least threatening player on the opponents team and the rest of the team is built to cover his weakness while he adds hella value on the defensive boards.
I dont think Josh is as poor a defender as that matrix makes him out to be. By other defensive measurements he was quite good / decent:
DBPM: 0.3
DWS: 1.7
DRTG: 112 (3rd best on the team of guys over 1K minutes)
I am one of those who thinks he should be defending PF. He is a really tough kid and can easily take the banging, and he rebounds well enough as well. Wont be a weakside shotblocker, but in terms of footspeed he can stick with the vast majority of PF and I dont think anyone will out tough him, again he is a gritty dude and his frame is big enough to get up to 225lbs IMO.
I do wonder if Presti thinks the same. You dont trade 3 future FRP for Dieng unless you see him as a potential long term fit in OKC as a starter, and on paper the size, movement and workable 3PT shot Dieng brings is ideal for a SF between SGA and Giddey.
He has some hope as a scorer / shooter. His corner 3% was 33%, but as he handles the ball alot he didnt end up in the corner much (20% of his attpts). He is already a really good finisher at 65% from 0-3 feet. His mechanics are broke and will limit his ability to create 3PT shots, but he can at least become a viable 3PT guy on kickouts.
Giddey is too natural a basketball player with too good a work ethic and too good a head on his shounders to not maximize every ounce of talent he has IMO. I just cant see him not being at worst an elite 4th guy, but I think he becomes the ideal #3 on OKC, complimenting Chet and SGA tremendously well. But clearly I have bathed in the cool aid already in re Josh.
