Can't completely empty the cupboard unless it's to compete for a title.

The Knicks don't have the assets to get someone that can near guarantee them to compete for a title.

So, back to giving a good amount of assets for Mitchell, who clearly makes them better, but not so many that there isn't some left over that they have some semblance of depth after the trade and all the picks aren't gone (just how few left depends)

They want to make sure they are able to still make a trade in a couple of years. That means holding onto enough picks so they’re not hamstrung by the Stepien rule. Probably also wanna hold onto the 2029 pick so they’d have that available to trade along with a 2031 pick 2 years from now. They know that Donovan‘s not the finishing piece

A trade request and preferred list of teams only matters when the player has a year or two left on their deal, he has 3 full seasons left before getting to a player option.

It probably won't make much of a difference but I'd imagine at least a couple of the suitors wouldn't want to bother trading for a "disgruntled" star/a guy who clearly doesn't want to be there, three year contract or not.

The game of chicken continues.

I will echo what others have said tho, we cant insist on keeping our young guys if they’re only going to be playing 15 mpg this year.

If we arent gonna trade Julius, then Obi should be traded. He can be semi-replaced by Paschall as a backup.

We gave up a 1st for Cam, so play him or trade him.

If we get Mitchell, then IQ and Grimes will never get off the bench here so they should be the first ones shipped out. Wed still have DRose, McBride, and Rokas at backup guard. Plus Mitchell and Brunson can be staggered to play with the bench a bit, and RJ can play some 2.

I'd still keep one of Grimes or IQ, for the shooting depth. Especially, in this case, that you seem to be sending Fournier out. I'd send Rose out instead.

Ideally Id like to keep IQ or Grimes yeah, but maybe including them both can save us from including an extra pick later. Just spitballin, because they’ll never be more than bench players here behind Brunson and Mitchell. They’re solid players, but unless they really breakout we can find decent bench guard scorers/shooters every draft.

The Julius/Obi situation is just funny tho. Like was Leon/Thibs seriously planning on going into the season playing Obi 12 mpg behind Julius again? Obi isnt playing enough to develop or up his trade value, so hes just wasting away here. This Mitchell trade seems to be forcing our front office to make a decision on these 2 at least.

Sure fair point---BUT Ainge does have much more pressure than some fans want to admit (in hopes of getting a deal done soon). Ainge took a 50+ win team (First seed in 20/21) and teared it down with the main purpose of having a top 5 (probably top 3) in a historically loaded draft. Trading Gobert but then starting the season with a disgruntled Mitchell who plays them out of the top 5 is gonna hurt his Plan big time. The Jazz have zero intention to start the season with Mitchell. Ainge IMO has not gotten the green light to gut a 50+ win team in a small market for a bordeline top 10 pick. His plan is clear--he wants that high 2023 pick---the only way to maximize his odds at it is to trade Mitchell during the offseason. Even 2 months of steller play by Mitchell could completely destroy his plans at a top 5 pick next year. He can't walk to the Jazz owner and say: "ooops sorry I traded away a playoff team and two all-stars for the ninth pick in the upcoming draft." ----That simply ain't happening. He will trade Mitchell before the season starts---he does have pressure to deal him.

Ainge has some pressure too, but there’s more pressure in NY.

I am pretty sure Ainge has gotten the green light or else he wouldn’t be shopping Mitchell around. Agree they will most likely trade him before the season and he wants to tank. There’s a lot of time though, and everyone may be waiting for the KD trade to drop first.

In the end most likely the Knicks and Jazz get the a done. Probably just nickleling and diming at this point.

no its not. James Harden being out of shape is easy for him. Its not easy for DM. He would have to go against ALL his training to come to camp fat. If it takes him coming to camp fat to get traded then he not getting traded.

A "credible source" needs to "leak" to Woj that Donovan is not interested in playing on a rebuilding team and is intreated by the possibility of going home. That could help move things along and not damage DM's public image.

Mitchell comes here overweight and sucks or gets hurt. Fans boo him. Then our 2023 pick to Utah ends up being the #1 pick.

This whole leverage angle is overrated imo.

I was being facetious. But him playing nice guy isn't going to help him get traded. Sometimes you need to be an a-hole to get your way.

Despite what they may put out there, Utah is committed to moving Mitchell. I'd be stunned if he starts the season with them.

To some extent it may truly be overrated, BUT IMO there is a certain price tag that makes a Mitchell trade simply not worth it anymore. If Mitchell was 6'6 and a bad defender you could at least argue that Thibs may turn him into a good defender but at 6'1 , defense will always a big hole in his game, making him strictly an offensive weapon. I simply would not put together a package worthy of a top 10 player in the league for Mitchell. It will come back to haunt us.

Mitchell is the type of player you put together an attractive package for---but if you go beyond that and completely overextend yourself you'll live to regret that in the not too distant future.
