Franz and Moritz Wagner to play in 2022 FIBA EuroBasket 9/1-9/18

Post#1 » by Knightro » Mon Jul 25, 2022 9:05 pm

Read on Twitter

Germany is co-hosting EuroBasket 2022 group-stage games (September 1-8) with Czech Republic, Georgia and Italy, with the knockout-stage games being played in Germany from Sept. 10-18.

Germany will also play a pair of World Cup qualifying games against Sweden (Aug. 25) and Slovenia (Aug. 28) before EuroBasket. While it isn’t official, Franz and Moe could play in those games.

The Magic’s training camp starts on Sept. 27.

It will be great for Franz, arguably Germany best player. I hope Schroeder will share ball handling duties. Moe, Franz two man game could be the main late game option. Its a shame games are in Cologne. Maybe quarterfinals are closer to Poland and i can go.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

I got tickets for two days, one in the Round of 16 and another in the quarter-finals.
I think I will be able to see both playing for Germany here in Berlin, hope they play well although I won't be really rooting for Germany NT.

Ok, I'm ready to declare myself a Germany fan for this tournament and root on our boys.

However, I have only an NBA fan's knowledge of European national teams. Can somebody either post or link to a quick overview on the German team and their expectations for the tournament? Please please?

Just a question.. Is Paolo and American or Italian citizen? Which team can he play?

I saw someone say he plans on playing for Italy next summer. Or maybe the Italian coach said it.

He has a better chance at making the Italian team. I think the last time a Magic player was on the USA team it was Dwight.

He will be THE man in the ITA team right? Then again, in the USA Team, who are the 6'11 250lbs offensive maestro players being groomed to replace the LBJ,Melo, KD, etc era of players? You would think Team USA knows NOT to be undersized when facing the rest anymore.

The USA has Mobley, Chet, Allen, and Barnes to groom.

It’s that time again. Franz has a chance to be as impactful on that German NT as Dirk or Turkish NT Hedo. Now I doubt that happens out of the gate in his first senior tourney. Schroeder will want 20+ ppg and Moritz (he was amazing for them last year) will get more touches.

The last time Germany hosted EuroBasket, they improbably won it in ‘93. Germany hosts all of its group stage matches, and the entire knockout stage. Germany should at least make it to the first knockout game. Anything beyond that is a bonus. If they beat France in that first group game Sept.1st, then those expectations will rise.

Franz’s role will be fascinating because he’ll be guarding guys like Doncic (there’s a FIBA World Cup qualifier before this tourney that they’ll play I believe) and Fournier, but who knows how much offensive responsibility he’ll get. Does he run some point with Schroeder. It’s going to be fun.

I believe ESPN+ has all of the games again. But we’ll have to illegally stream any friendlies.

Paolo has already pledged himself to play for Italy next year at the 2023 FIBA World Cup in the Philippines.

I just wish he’d play for Italy now at EuroBasket. It’s way more valuable than these pro ams. He’d face Gianni and Greece, as well as Croatia, and Italy hosts all of their group stage games, so Paolo would be playing in front of Italians. Paolo could be Italy’s savior like Gianni is for Greece. He’s be super marketable factoring in the US Italian diaspora.

Normally I would say your logic makes sense. However, as far as National Teams go, would that be really good? Chemistry-wise? He probably never practice or met with the rest of the team yet.

Yes but you missed out on my part where i said " offensive maestro" You know, where I also said LBJ, Melo and KD? Now don't get me wrong, Mobley, Chet, ( which Allen BTW? ) and Barnes are good defensively for bigs but I am focusing on the offensive part.

He would’ve had a full month and maybe a few FIBA World Cup qualifiers sprinkled in with them before the tourney starts.

Is that enough? I read from "powerhouse" NT that they all know or played with each other years before already. I mean sure if ITA really has no one and isn't expecting to go deep they could always put PB in.

I could go either way on Paolo playing internationally immediately. On the one hand, it's better to start building chemistry now rather than later, and playing against this competition would've been a good development opportunity. On the other hand I can see why he would stay Stateside and focus on transitioning to nba life. It's probably a lot to take in already, with a bunch of things that need to be handled and taken care of while trying to prepare yourself optimally for the actual season.

More on topic: here's a list of Germany's group stage games. Start times will be euro time (gmt+2), so that's usually -6 hours for you guys in the Eastern Timezone, unless there's some daylight savings shenanigans going on at that time.

Game 1: France vs Germany, on September 1st (thu) at 20:30
Game 2: Germany vs Bosnia and Hercegovina, on September 3rd (sat) at 14:30
Game 3: Lithuania vs Germany, on September 4th (sun) at 14:30
Game 4: Germany vs Slovenia, on September 6th (tue) at 20:30
Game 5: Hungary vs Germany, on September 7th (wed) at 20:30

They play all their games in Köln (also known as Cologne), which almost makes me consider making the trip over there to take in a game or two.
