Wizards/Bullets/Zephyrs/Packers All Time Team 1,2,3
Pick a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team ATG from this team for each of the 5 positions. Try to stay true to what they played here and only using the seasons with this team (ie, not Jordan's chicago years). Career value on the team so longevity counts. Off the top of my head:
C Unseld/Bellamy/? (Ruland, Moses, Ellison, Haywood, who do you have?)
PF Hayes/Webber/Gus Johnson
SF Dandridge/Butler/King
SG Beal/Chenier/? (Grevey, Chaeney, etc.)
PG Arenas/Monroe/K.Porter

Pretty good. John Wall has to be on it. Greg Ballard.

Because they were fun to watch:
PG. Muggsy, Rod Strickland, Godd Shamgodd (on his name alone and a move named after him)
SG. Arenas, nobody else
SF. Old Man Jordan, Tuff Juice, nobody else
PF. Webber at point forward, Sheed's short fuse, Jamison's junkball game and ushering in the stretch 4 smallball era
C. Muresan, Ben Wallace, Bol

Re: Wizards/Bullets/Zephyrs/Packers All Time Team 1,2,3
Strickland wasn't fun to watch; walk the ball up, overdribbling, not hustling on defense. Fun to watch would be Kevin Porter (anyone else remember Loughery putting in a half court fast break offense where the defense was set and he would pull all 5 players out to the half court line and run a fast break anyway?), Muggsy, Earl Monroe, Agent Zero, Wall at times, . . . plus maybe Freddie "Mad Dog" Carter, Robert Pack, and Scott Stiles in their limited stretches.
Also disliked Old Man Jordan, game wasn't fun to watch anymore and his ego/attitude were never likeable; disliked Webber though I agree his game was fun to watch, Sheed was more a whiny rookie and hadn't really established the whole short fuse thing yet that I recall. In terms of bigs, I'd say fun was Gus Johnson (the original backboard breaker), McFilthy and McNasty (for the nicknames and just general mayhem), Mitch Kupchak, Truck Robinson, Manute, Never Nervous Pervis (though maybe not as he was always not quite right), Georghe, possibly Antawn, and current fun guy Kuzma.
For wing forwards, I didn't like King and Ballard was competent but never exciting. I'd go with Terry Dischinger (never met a shot he didn't love), Jack Marin (only guy I ever saw that sweated more than Moses Malone and pretty good at that), Dandridge (forward done right), and Caron Butler. John "Hot Plate" Williams should get a mention too and maybe Ledell Eackles.

Rip was good when he played with us - i don't think he got markedly better when he went to the Pistons.
Larry Hughes was good too, only his peak was like 2.5 seasons.
And I think Gortat was underappreciated, especially if we're counting longevity.

Re: Wizards/Bullets/Zephyrs/Packers All Time Team 1,2,3
Agree to disagree. Strickland was a New York streetball legend. Playing in the cages at the tiny court of West 4th Street he dominated with the quintessential NYC point guard game. Tight handle, smooth touch on impossible passes, unimpressed by anyone. I can knock him for puking up hot dogs, having no 3-ball, and playing like he barely cared, or relaxing on the injury list while CWHit played with two amputated feet. But the way Strickland could take over games with passing and an interior attack scoring inside a crowd of giants made me hit rewind on video tapes. He had no outside shot and his signature move was basically to hit the "jelly", a floating reverse lay-up blind off the glass. And his facial expression never changed no matter how impossible the make or pass.
Jordan was grumpy, ill tempered, bad natured and I had residual dislike for him for the years he destroyed my teams. But the arena was electric whenever he did anything. Suddenly crowds showed up.
Sheed was whiny, yes, but I enjoyed watching him because he absolutely never stopped flapping his gums, whether playing or sitting on the bench. You could tell he was pissing people off, even his teammates, which for whatever reason amused me.
And every now and then he would do something that showed his talent and the eventual game he would grow into. It irked me that we had to see it happen on other teams.
Ha! What can I say, I like entertaining villains. Probably why I have a problem with Tommy's quest for "character" above all else.

Didn't say you couldn't like them, I said I didn't. Did you love the Ruland/Mahorn years?

For those who are not over 55, here's some perspective on Hayes, Unseld and Dandridge.penbeast0 wrote:Pick a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team ATG from this team for each of the 5 positions. Just some great memories.
Googs was fun. Loved Ruland AND Moses
Grew up watching Marin, Loughery, Archie Clark. Loved Watching Hughes and Butler...
I had forgotten how great a shooter Jeff Malone was. Never could understand how Bernard King was so unstoppable.
Hey, and Mugsy Bougues.
How GREAT a basketball player do you have to be to succeed in the NBA at five-foot-THREE?

Hmm. In the mid 1980's I was reading The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Love and Rockets, Cerebus, and the early cyberpunk explosion of sci fi. Road Warrior, Mad Max, Suburbia, Repo Man, Terminator. I was listening to the Clash, blues, punk rock/hardcore, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Run DMC, some Led Zeppelin and acts from that prior era, 24-7 Spyz, Fishbone, Sabbath, Metallica. Sneaking out late at night to ride BMX bike to nowhere in particular. Shoplifting porn magazines. Committing occasional acts of vandalism or other misdemeanor shenanigans. Drawing pictures to entertain myself, while being cool and not bothering with having friends. Sports were off my radar, except Mike Tyson, and basketball in the Finals. Skateboarding at the time ollies were just being invented, reading about them in Thrasher magazine. Failing to make it work. Watching Bones Brigade skate videos. Then I made a crew of art/writing buddies who smoked weed, partied, debated politics, and made art. So nah, no idea what was happening with the Bullets of that era. Crack did come into play and kids started buying guns and getting shot though so I was aware of those sorts of bullets. And at any moment Ronald Reagan and the USSR were likely to push the button and we would all have to live in a post apocalyptic wasteland so sports were basically pointless.

I think it comes down to are we talking who was the best at their prime on the team or overall players to ever put on a DC jersey ?
You have to mentioned names like
MJ, Paul Pierce, Dwight Howard, Russel Westbrook, John wall, Bradley Beal, Brendon Hayward, Antwan Jamison, Caron Butler, Gilbert Arenas, wes, Elvin Hayes, Walt Bellamy, earl Monroe, Phil chanier, Chris's Webber Jawan Howard, Rip Hamilton. Maybe bol, Moses Malone, rod Strickland.

It is unfathomably sad that we haven't had a single player make All-NBA 1st team since Elvin Hayes in 1979. Think about that for a minute. At any given time, there are are 5-10 active players better than the very best Wizard over the last 43 years!

Re: Wizards/Bullets/Zephyrs/Packers All Time Team 1,2,3
Teams with players who had at least one season better than the best Wizard in the last 43 years:
Atlanta: Wilkins
Brooklyn: Durant, Kidd, Tatum
Boston: Bird, Garnett, McHale, Pierce
Charlotte:
Chicago: Jordan, Pippen, Rose, Noah, Butler, Derozan
Cleveland: Lebron
Dallas: Nowitzki, Doncic
Denver: Jokic, Melo
Detroit: G.Hill, Thomas
Golden State: Durant, Curry
Houston: Olajuwon, Harden, McGrady
LA Lakers: Lebron, Kareem, Magic, Shaq, Kobe, A.Davis, P.Gasol
LA Clippers: CP3, Kawhi, Griffin
Indiana: P.George
Memphis: Morant, M.Gasol
Miami: Lebron, Zo, Wade, Butler
Milwaukee: Giannis, Moncrief
Minnesota: Garnett
New York: Ewing, Melo
New Orleans: CP3, A.Davis
Oklahoma City: Durant, Westbrook, Payton, Kemp
Orlando: Shaq, Howard, McGrady
Philadelphia: Erving, Moses, Barkley, Iverson, Embiid, Butler
Phoenix: Barkley, Nash, Kidd, Booker
Portland: Drexler, Lillard
Sacramento: Webber
San Antonio: Duncan, Robinson, Kawhi
Toronto: Kawhi
Utah: Malone
You could quibble that a couple of these guys didn't beat out Arenas' best year (Noah, Melo, Pierce, George, Booker) but the general point still stands. Only Charlotte has had a similar dearth of top tier talent over the last 43 years. This is why management lionizes second tier talent like Wall and Beal. They don't even know what it means to have a genuine superstar.
