I’m sure shooting drills are a big part of Deni’s offseason drills. But conditioning and shooting go hand-in-hand. You can’t stroke the ball, especially at the end of games, if you have tired legs.

And more importantly, a 53-second video of him working out does not mean he isn't also working on his shooting at some point during the other 86,307 seconds of the day.

Many times I've wondered how many seconds there are in a day, & now I know.
That's 604,800 in a week, guys. No time to waste on foolish things.*
* like figuring out how many seconds there are in a week, for example.

Re: Deni Avdija
yup, One could see this starting to happen last year. I count him as one of our good 1-on-1 defenders. It is possible for him to become a very good defender this year. If he develops a shot, any shot, that would make him an above average player on the team. He has been working on his shot, and other things, during this offseason. At 21 yo, that would be an amazing accomplishment if he does this.

Re: Deni Avdija
Interesting read, Drew Hanlen interviewed about his offseason work with Avdija.

What stood out to me (Bill == Beal):
train him or did it take you some time to make the decision?
"It took me some time until I returned an answer, I made several conversations with people who are close to Danny to understand what he is like as a person. I spoke with the Wizards' management, with his teammates, with people I knew knew him and with the Israeli development coach Yogev Bardogo. I wanted to know everything about Abdiya as a player and as a person, and I felt that he was one of those players who had not yet realized their great potential. I wanted to wake him up so that he would become the player that everyone thinks he can be."
What did Bill tell you about Abdia?
"That he was never pushed or trained properly. He also told me that Danny has a lot of potential and that he can become an excellent player, but for that to happen he needs to improve his shooting and be mentally more stable."

I noticed that comment as well. You sometimes see Deni getting frustrated over calls, etc…and lose focus. I attribute it to both his age and lack of NBA experience.
I’m guessing that Beal’s actually words (before the translation) were be “mentally tough.”

Deni in the top right! Beal ranks well by this metric too.

- Corey Kispert is far to the left (hidden defensively) and he ranks -0.5, which is modestly sub-par but not awful.
- I think that's Kuzma at 0.75 on the X-axis and -0.8 on the Y-axis (mostly obscured by Eric Gordon).
- KCP is all the way to the right at just below 0 on the Y-axis.
- I think that's Gafford at -0.5 X-axis and -0.5 Y-axis, although it might be Ish Smith.
- I can't find Hachimura anywhere. I suspect minutes played dictates whether you are upfront or behind another image, so Rui is buried somewhere. It's possible that's him just to the bottom right of Gafford peaking over the right shoulder of Valanciunas.

I would very much like to understand how this is calculated. Its easier to rate offensive players, and (good) defensive metrics that rate each player as a reflection of other players are hard to find. I am surprised by Beal being ranked as high. I am not surprised at Avdija.

Re: Deni Avdija
Deni looked improved in today's Israel vs Auburn friendly:
- he hit multiple 3s, including a very confident deep 3 from 28+ ft
- his handle looked a bit tighter
- he attacked closeouts well
- he looked quicker, too (albeit against smaller, slower D-I competition)
- he drew a ton of fouls
But, it's not like he turned into Luka in one summer, either:
- a few bad misses from 3 (including one step back 3 attempt)
- a few missed bunnies
- he fouled out!
Still: he racked up gaudy stats, and was clearly the best player on the floor.

Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.
