Probably other TOP-10 guys would have troubles guarding Luka in May in their season #17… At least some of them.
I mean, Chris Paul isn’t Gary Payton on defense but he’s better than Steve Nash and Bob Cousy.

Re: Is Pat Beverley crazy? Or is he right?
Younger CP3 was an elite defender... still he would be sitting duck if a 6'6 star scorer is posting him... CP3 is a small player for NBA standards... he's 5'11 without shoes and just over 6'0 in his sneakers. He is thick though but doesn't make up for taller guards with about an extra foot height over a stretched CP3 at the peak of their Jump shots. And obviously down low even stiffs would score on the very best guard defenders...
But since he has joined Suns... he's more of a team defender. Still fast hands... and knows where to be... but those knees and ankles aren't going to be twitchy without being sore after a few minutes hence he only does what he can without risking his body... it's already frail come May every year so why increase risk of injury.

but honestly, at this point, it's like asking if sidney moncrief is a good defender. i mean, you put him in the league today, probably not.
Moncrief at age 60? Or in his prime?
Pretty sure in his prime his size and tenacity would still translate.
age 60. the point being it's not a question of whether paul is a good defender, it's a question of whether he was a good defender. at 37, it's impressive he's still contributing in the league - can't be expected to be the same player he was in his prime. we should give the guy credit for still being a good player at 37.

Well, CP3 was struggling against Brunson too. To be fair, out of the top point guards probably only half would for sure lock him down - Payton, Isiah, Stockton, Kidd, maybe Magic cause of his height but he lacked lateral quickness. Nash would definitely get torched. CP3 is better than Nash on that end, but far from being among the better defenders at this point.
Beverley is not wrong that CP has no chance against Luka, but yea, when he expanded on what he meant it started to not make much sense. It's not really a diss anymore.
None of the top 10 all time PG's could defend even Brunson well at 37, especially not if they also had a large offensive role. Many of them by 37 were single digit scorers with small roles on their team, at least that lets you conserve energy.
CP himself tore up Kidd when he was on Dallas at 34 years old because Kidd was not quick enough anymore. Kidd's defensive strength when he got older was not guarding quick PG's, it was his overall defense and then man defense on SG's and SF's, his great advantage over CP was the 4 inches of height which included more strength and weight.
So if you then explain that what you mean is that Paul at 37 years old can't guard in comparison to top 10 all time players in their prime, well, that's not saying much. Paul at 37 can't guard compared to himself in his prime.
Paul ha still been an overall good defender for Phoenix, but that's with IQ, playing smart, etc, but if you can hunt him and make him guard every possession and the team can't cover for him, you're going to make him suffer at this age.

Not only is he 6'0, he does not have any sort of impressive wing span or reach for his height, so he was always liable to be shot over easily.

Chris Paul has been a significantly better defender than Beverly almost their entire careers.

I think.. CP3 has a lost a step..but when younger...I remember he was on a streak getting like 10 steals a game..

His about as good as you can be considering his height. I pray Darius Garland can be at least as good as him.

Chris Paul was as good a defender as you’ll get from a PG, and made every team he was on significantly better on that end.
Even this version is a more valuable defensive piece than Beverly so.

Also, CP3 is almost 40.
That’s why I wanted to ask everyone. Reality is, I don’t watch any games outside of the warriors, unless it’s the playoffs, and I’m casual about. Stats actually show Paul as a pretty good defender still. But stats can be deceiving too.

Re: Is Pat Beverley crazy? Or is he right?
Beverly fools people into thinking he's some elite defender. Even in his prime he was no CP3, Lowry, Smart, Jrue or any other elite guard. Beverly's main reason for being in the league is his feisty defense and yappy attitude.

Westbrook said the same thing about him.
CP3 is a 9x All-Defensive player so... I don't know.

Re: Is Pat Beverley crazy? Or is he right?
Pat Bev is the player version of Skip, yes he's semi-sane but the things he says are often totally crazy. Send this man straight to Fox or ESPN for the next 15 years to give awful clickbait takes.
Also it's fun to think about how elite NBA players are at their craft. Bev is a straight scrub in the league and he averaged 37 ppg in high school
Chris Paul is so skilled at all aspects of the game, it's not even funny. Yeah he's old and slow but where's Deron Williams right now? The fact CP3 is still in the game and delivering his annual playoff choke job is a testament to something or other.
