IIRC Shaq said Bill Russell was the one who told him to bury the hatchet with Kobe. And pre-game in a Heat v Lakers game Shaq went up and gave him a hug and they talked a bit and after that they were cool again.

Jerry Reynolds -fr. Kings Coach/GM/Color analyst- tells a story from when he was the lead assistant under Russell in Sacramento. The Kings acquired Ralph Sampson and Bill had him come to his office. At one point Russell asks Sampson to put his hand up as high as he could. Bill walks over and stands next to him and does the same. According to Jerry, Bill put almost his entire hand over the top of Sampson’s. Jerry said it was a lightbulb moment, Bill wasn’t just 6’10.

Russell was designed in a lab to be the GOAT defensive player.

From his Jr year at little USF (when racial inequality still ran rampant) until he retired from the game, Mr. Russell competed for 16 titles and led his teams to 14 championships. 2 NCAA, Olympic Gold and 11 NBA rings. I’m an old Sixer fan, but I submit that this Celtic giant is the greatest competitor in the history of team sports. A physical specimen, sports genius, and indomitable spirit. RIP.

Probably NBA GOAT in the first 4 decades of the league (or co-GOAT with KAJ), and still NBA defensive GOAT. A true giant and legend of this sport.
