Seems like a light return for 1.5 years of the best closer in baseball

Are all of you guys looking up the wrong Rogers or something?
Taylor Rogers is no slouch. Has had a rough 2 weeks (so did Hader) but he is 80% of Josh Hader. WAR is maybe not the best stat for relievers, but his career WAR is 8.6 vs. Hader's at 9.4 in roughly similar innings.

The bottom line is they apparently preferred MLB contributors or close to it as opposed to higher upside prospects. I don't like it and never will, but It is what it is.

Stearns knocks it out of the park.
I think this is another good trade
Taylor Rodgers is barely worse than Hader
Lamet was a dominant starter turned reliever because of some never-ending injury issues, but still has great upside
Ruiz has some potential
They must like Gasser as a power pitcher
I'm a fan.
The dude is 30 years old.
30 years old, but just two years removed from being 4th in Cy Young voting. Hasn't been pretty since, but hopefully the Brewers can turn him around.
Ruiz's stats splitting even(ish) time across AA and AAA this year: .333/.467/.560 splits with 13 home runs and 60 stolen bases. Has positional versatility between 2B and CF.
I'll withhold judgment until we see if Hader can return to dominant form, and if Rodgers can get back to his early-season self. I don't know that the Brewers are necessarily worse after this trade. Could be a wash, but with money savings.

He's had an ERA over 7 since the end of April and he's a FA after the season.

Right. I wouldn't be shocked if Lamet is fundamentally broken and sucks. He was a buzzy starting pitcher coming into 2019/2020 and had elbow issues. Then more.
Out of the bullpen he struggled this year. FB velocity is down from his dominance.
But in the minors after getting sent down to early season struggles, he is striking out 13 batters per 9 with a 0.77 ERA. It's entirely possible Stearns sees that he's ready to come back as a good/dominant reliever.

You can say roughly the same thing about Hader due to a few recent blowup innings.
Rogers' ERA on June 24 was 2.70.

I'm in San Diego, and a Padres fan. It was announced a few days ago that the Padres would make changes to their closer due to Rogers' recent struggles. He was excellent to start the year, and struggled of late. The Padres play a lot of one run games so they need to feel confident in their closer. AJ Preller has targeted Hader for a while now.
Ruiz is lightning fast. The question is if he can hit at the major league level.
Lamet was a top of the rotation guy but his elbow issues made him limited now.
Gasser was not one of the top prospects (their top 4 are really highly touted) but still a good prospect (their #7 prospect I believe).

It's probably tough trading your stud closer while you're leading the division on August 1st. Move him in the offseason and you can focus on prospects. Moving him now without getting something that also helps the team now is probably a really hard thing to do.
Admittedly I know little about the guys they're getting back, but from the bit I've quickly seen online, this seems like an underwhelming return.

Re: 2022 Brewers Trades, Transactions, News - Hader to Padres
I think the thing to remember, is that even with a trend towards bullpen ball and Hader being a special case given he is so extremely dominant...
...it's still a relief pitcher and like 55-60 innings pitched in a given season, maybe even less with Hader only asking to go one inning.
If Rogers is 80-90% of what Josh Hader is for the final 20-25 innings pitched this year, that is an unbelievably small difference. MLB GMs know this.
As for next year...I get that. But my guess is that they see star potential in Gasser, Lamet could be fixed, and Ruiz at the very least is a useful MLB player for 5 more years with upside.

I could see this although I think servino isn't eligible for the postseason so that could complicate things.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

im down for some selling! team isn't going to challenge the mets or dodgers. Would have wished they got just prospects for hader, but rogers is solid and can help this season and line Mark A's pockets while they make the post season again.

I admittedly am not plugged into the baseball hot stove as much as I am with other sports, but how often do closers, even dominant ones, get you a haul via trade? Seems like that's the big conundrum here with Hader only being under team control one more season after this. If this was the best deal then maybe Stearns thought it prudent to cash out rather than wait till the offseason and watch Hader's value dip further.

McCalvy said Gasser will be our #8 and Ruiz our #9 prospects.

Agreed. I am underwhelmed by the return here, but I have a pretty good amount of trust in Stearns. I don't doubt he did his due diligence; wish it had happened in the offseason, but like you said, maybe his value dips further.

I am naïve in this as well, so I looked up the most recent one I could think of...which was in 2016 when Yankees traded Chapman to the Cubs:
New York Yankees traded Aroldis Chapman to Chicago Cubs in exchange for Adam Warren, Gleyber Torres, Billy McKinney and Rashad Crawford.
Looks like we did alright? Granted Chapman was also a FA after the season, so I do get that, but still.

Interesting for the Padres who will get Drew Pomeranz back soon to have Pomeranz and Hader be their 8th and 9th inning guys assumingly. Both now former Brewers.

Padres fan checking in on Hader. He seemed very consistaent as can get for his career. Any thoughts on maybe why he struggled this year? Although 29 saves, 2 blown doesn't show struggle at all. I assume his higher ERA is due to a lot of his non-save situations this year?

I’m expecting at least one more significant trade. No way they don’t try to improve the offense.

He gave up 3 ER and 6 ER in back-to-back save chances. That's it.
