Stearns has proven to be pretty good at this stuff but this isn't the type of deal I would've been looking for when moving Hader. Wildly interesting to me that they chose now of all times to finally pull the trigger. I'd love to know if it's because they're more worried about Hader's value or if they really love this return.

He had like a zero ERA going into June, then gave up like 9 earned runs in literally 2 games to balloon his ERA. He struggled, but his ERA is very misleading. He is still legit and a top reliever in baseball.

I don't care if they received a ballboy back in the trade. I am probably in the minority, but I have been waiting for this day for a while and am glad that dude is no longer a Brewer. Please don't come back.

Yeah I recall this now. He was dominant for a long time. Rogers was the same way for the Padres out of the gates this year but he's been very inconsistent of late.

The return makes me feel like Attanasio wanted more major league ready pieces to win-now.

I guess the fear of another bad postseason or even worse an injury go them to cash in now.

It didn't make any sense to pay him long term, you just can't pay a premium on relievers as a budget team. So had to be done at some point and other teams knew that so they probably would have been dealing from a place of perceived desperation this winter.

Keep an eye on Ruiz. He always had tools (namely speeeeeed) but his hitting broke out this year in the minors. He plays hard and aggressive. Easy to like and root for.

I'd imagine Stearns did, too.

Nobody's gonna actually sell off their chances to win when they are 1st place in August.

But to pivot and maybe help the future as well as stay competitive this year? That's something he may have wanted.

Hader's struggles coincided with him becoming a father, no? I always figured the dude just wasn't getting enough sleep then.

Anyway, I've been waiting for them to pull the trigger on this move for years now. Most teams have probably learned to stop giving up top prospects for relievers.

I just don’t see how the trade made the team any worse. Will it make it better? Maybe.

This team, as was constructed, wasn’t going to be more than a Division winner/Wild Card team anyway.

Stearns almost always kills it in trades like this, especially when it involves taking on distressed assets. Trades like this are how you often get the Josh Haders of the world in the first place. Great business decision too IMO, especially with Williams pitching the way he has. Also, closers are over-valued, especially when you factor in potential high variance and anomalies in their small sample of playoff outings. Hader's history there is not elite, and personally I still think he was more valuable to the team as an all-time great multi-inning fireman in extremely high leverage situations.

Rogers and Lament join the team, Gasser to Biloxi and Ruiz to Nashville.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

By the way, I predict that Williams will have a bad first week as closer and Brewer fans will lose their damn minds, but then he'll be awesome again.

Hopefully doesn't get upset and punch a wall.

All Gassers belong in Wisconsin.

I'd have no problem with Ruiz taking Davis's spot in the OF rotation. Davis has been great patrolling CF and has worked his way on base, but that guy has not, is not and will likely never be a hitter.

Important to remember that the last time the Brewers traded with the Padres, most lambasted the trade for the Brewers (me included). Ultimately, it became clear that the Brewers actually won the trade.
