Sanctions against Russia for ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Affects EuroBasket, World Cup, and Olympics.
This is relevant, because their main point guard, Thomas Heurtel is linked to Zenit. Man, Heurtel was probably my favorite player in Euroleague, but after these past 2 years, and if he signs with Russian team, damn, they say don't hero people you dont know.
I'm puzzled why any player would choose to play for a Russian team given the invasion. But life must be more difficult with other sanctions, too. Hard to believe players don't have other options. Wasn't it in Russia where players were complaining that their pay was late? And that was before the war...
Anyway, France is getting hit by injuries and now these sanctions. When fully available it's the biggest threat.
Pay delays can happen anywhere in EUrope, usually with smaller clubs or the ones that are in debts, and there are a lot of those. If anything, it wont happen in Petersburg or Moscow, those clubs are filthy rich, they have all the perks NBA teams have, like private jets and everything. I mean if player morally doesn't care about Russia doing terrible things, I can see how he would just go for the money. Also, Russian clubs being banned from Euroleague, that basically cuts half of your games you have to play.
But yeah, just have to be other options, I dont expect anyone to really sign with Russian teams now, Just seem like a dumb move, but France federation putting rules just in case. If anything, I think they just making it public, because I imagine a lot of countries feel the same way and this would just go without saying.
