Looking at it strictly from the playoffs pov, they need to add atleast 1 elite reliever plus another almost elite reliever. There are enough soon to be 40 man roster graduates that atkins can barter to get a deal done without touching the top prospects.

The problem, as Wilner noted in his column today, is that most if not all of the relievers on the market this week are not elite. Maybe one or two of them once were, but have battled injuries, or inconsistency. Even if their numbers are good, you wouldn't feel they are elite. The question is whether a team could be tempted to sell on a controllable elite guy for a prospect haul, and whether buyers would be tempted to offer, or dare I say overpay, to get such an elite, controllable guy. Usually they won't, unless they think that adding such an elite controllable guy gets them enough extra wins. I think the Jays would prioritize other needs if they overpay. I thought Castillo might be that guy; Seattle obviously did.

Re: General Blue Jays Thread, 2020
Even in inflated market, Blue Jays can't afford to pass up trade opportunities - Sportsnet.ca
“Last year, there was a lot of emotion and hype around coming home and the additions we made,” said interim manager John Schneider in comparing the situation last summer to this one. “Right now we're still a really, really good team, that’s playing really well right now. So, similar (situations) but you put a year of experience and a year of playing together with this group and I really like where we are right now.”
Added Berrios: “I came here for one purpose, for one reason and I've got (winning) in mind. That's why I extended my (contract) for seven more years. Everyone here (is working) to make that happen and to win a World Series.”
For that reason, the Blue Jays can’t suddenly go all conservative in a market that tilted further in the sellers’ favour when Seattle sent three top-10 prospects, including their Nos. 1 and 2, and another player to Cincinnati for ace Luis Castillo.
Compared to the cost for Berrios a year ago, the inflation was jarring, the deadline equivalent of the year-over-year change to your gas bill. The Blue Jays are fortunate enough to have a farm system that can afford the spike and it’s on them to augment in as responsible a manner as they can, no matter how much they dislike the prices.
One rival evaluator, breaking down their roster and chances, noted how this is a down year for the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays, that the Mariners are desperate, that wild-card hopefuls Cleveland and Minnesota aren’t on the Blue Jays’ level.
“I hope they go for it,” he said.
To that end the Blue Jays’ focuses, according to another industry source, appeared to be on adding a starter and two relief pieces, with a lean toward the rental side.
Jon Morosi of MLB Network said the trade market for Oakland Athletics starter Frankie Montas was locked in on the Blue Jays, New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals and the righty has another year left of contractual control, making him more expensive.
The Blue Jays and A’s know each other well from making the Chapman deal back in the spring and one tenet of trading at this time of year is to only use your top prospects if an all-star calibre player is coming back in return.
Montas, who recently returned from shoulder issues, is definitely in the upper tier of starters but his health is a question. He’d undoubtedly provide a major boost for their rotation, but there’s a case to be made that plowing mid-tier prospect capital into the bullpen might be more impactful.
The Blue Jays have been reluctant to make significant bullpen investments in recent seasons because of the volatility in reliever performance, but when push comes to shove in the playoffs, the ball is often in their hands when games are decided.
For that reason, David Robertson of the Chicago Cubs seems like a happy medium, offering both experience, in-season performance and rental status to keep the price more tolerable.
The Tigers have another rental on their radar in Michael Fulmer, but also some longer-term pieces that fit for the Blue Jays in Gregory Soto, Joe Jimenez and Alex Lange. Each auditioned here this weekend and the sense on the other side of the dugout is that some of their players would remain in Toronto.
That didn’t play out and the Tigers will need to be tempted to surrender relievers with multiple years of control beyond this season, because if they’re soon to turn the corner, they’ll be looking for relievers like Soto, Jimenez and Lange to have in their bullpen.

Berrios trade gave Blue Jays a spark. Can 2022 team get similar deadline boost? - Sportsnet.ca
While rivals like the New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays have all made additions to try and alter their field position, the Blue Jays have yet to strike. The expectation remains that they will, with their focus on adding pitching, according to industry sources. It is believed they have the ability and financial capacity for impactful moves.
One of those sources believes the Blue Jays were “neck-and-neck,” with the Yankees for right-hander Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino. The inclusion of pitching prospects Ken Waldichuk and Luis Medina, ranked Nos. 5 and 9 in their system by Baseball America, likely tipped the scales in New York’s favour.
That deal was the third one made by the Yankees, who at 69-34 have an 11.5 game lead on the Blue Jays in the American League East and are eyeing the World Series. Before the deal, their FanGraphs odds of going all the way stood at 13.1 per cent, trailing the Dodgers (17.3%), Astros (15.9%) and Mets (14.5%).
Atlanta was next at 11.6 per cent followed by the Blue Jays at 6.8 per cent and while a couple of deals won’t necessarily alter that dramatically, more important is this question: how often will they have this type of opportunity before them?
Pulling off a deal without sacrificing their best pieces is the challenge and perhaps a reason why nothing has happened yet. But there’s a risk in overemphasizing future potential at the expense of present impact.
The bullpen is an obvious area of need and the Blue Jays could use starting depth, as well. They are believed to like David Robertson’s combination of experience and stuff, and as a rental, he fits their comfort zone. Prying him from the Chicago Cubs is the challenge.
A more complicated matchup is with the Detroit Tigers, and speculation on their end was that some of their players would end up crossing over to the Blue Jays side this weekend.
Their motivation is clear, concluding that what they did this year didn’t work and if nothing changes, well, nothing changes. At the same time though, unlike rental righty Michael Fulmer, who is on the Blue Jays’ radar, dealing away relievers with extended periods of contractual control like Joe Jimenez, Gregory Soto, Alex Lange or Will Vest could leave them looking for replacement arms down the road.

Syndergaard isn't the pitcher he once was, but he's still a solid 4th starter. Pure rental on a large one-year deal, so he shouldn't cost much.
I really don't want Iglesias, who is paid way too much for a reliever, for far too long.

**** your asterisk.

I liked going after Syndergaard in the off season and wouldn't hate his addition now..up and down season but he slots in nicely at the 4 yea.

“With respect to what the package would be, I believe based on what I’ve been told the last couple days, that the Jays maybe dipped their toe in there, there’s some interest, but they’re not significantly involved on Soto at the moment. What I believe to be involved, they would have to trade Bo Bichette. He would have to be the piece."
“They need right now position players, and I think from the Nationals’ perspective, they would rather have Bo than Teoscar (Hernandez) or (Lourdes) Gurriel. I think that’s probably where they’re at right now."
“I think where the Jays are now, unless you are able to make a second move that brings in a shortstop you like, I would have a hard time seeing (it happen).”

I'd trade bichette for Soto. But Soto would want a Kings Ransom as Salary and I'm sure that will be too big a price to pay for the Jays, specially on that long term deal he's seeking.
