Re: 2022 ATL Thread
Apparently Hosmer in in this deal and his no trade clause is the hold up. Would be a crazy thing to derail a deal like this.

He's gonna get a nice pay day for waiving this one. Hell he could just ask for his outright release.

Another big contact that didn't work out. What's the percentage of $100+ mil baseball contacts that work out? Like 20%?Turk Nowitzki wrote:Apparently Hosmer in in this deal and his no trade clause is the hold up. Would be a crazy thing to derail a deal like this.
Unless you have an unlimited payroll seems like just having young guys and dudes on 1 yr deals is the only way to build a team.

Reminds me of when we had to trade Lucroy twice because he wouldn't waive his no trade and go to Cleveland.

Baseball is so weird... guys get PAID!!!! after they perform for like 6 years... The minute they sign their first FA deal (unless they avoid arby), the player is on a constant decline. almost every deal is a regret almost right away.

7 years ago the Royals won but that's about it for a long time. 2019 Nats had the 4th highest opening day payroll.

Re: 2022 ATL Thread
does Soto put the Padres on the same level as the dodgers? i know its baseball and anything happens in the playoffs, but i still don't think the padres can compete with the dodgers or yankees. I like the trade for both teams, though.

Re: 2022 ATL Thread
Totally. And I get that the back end of these big deals are basically deferred money and not really designed to be good value but it's still a weird system. Like half the league is basically a feeder system for like 8-10 teams who can really spend.neiLz wrote:WeekapaugGroove wrote:Another big contact that didn't work out. Re: 2022 ATL Thread
Annoying that they got Josh Bell thrown into the deal. I thought he was a pretty realistic target that would help the Brewers.

Re: 2022 ATL Thread
The Hosmer portion of the deal is weird. Apparently, he has a no-trade clause and Washington was on the list, yet they still tried to send him there. Why not reach out to him beforehand or see if you can move him to a third team?

Re: 2022 ATL Thread
Sounds like Hosmer isn't ultimately going to hold up the deal from getting done.

I think they will have another deal in place if Hosmer ends up holding it up. Maybe one prospect not included or something.
But I bet both teams want this to happen. Padres want to get rid of Hosmer's deal/roster spot, Nats are willing to pay a few bucks to get better prospects.
So they just pushed it through trying to get the no-trade clause waived by the pressure. If not, they move to the other deal.

Re: 2022 ATL Thread
So, uh, why did Washington agree to take Hosmer in the first place?

It looks like they'd essentially have been buying an extra player (Mackenzie Gore?) and the Padres would pay some of his contract.
Both teams wanted it to happen and they hoped the deal being agreed upon may get Hosmer to make his move.
I think the Padres wanted to clear the 1B spot for Bell as well as some of the contract.

It's grown on me to the point where I think if they mic'd up some key players every game it'd be the most watched sport on the planet. This has been pretty great.
We've had players on mics in T20 cricket for awhile. This was one of the more fun occasions -
The most interesting thing about this clip was the prominent KFC advertising in Australia.
