This is relevant, because their main point guard, Thomas Heurtel is linked to Zenit. Man, Heurtel was probably my favorite player in Euroleague, but after these past 2 years, and if he signs with Russian team, damn, they say don't hero people you dont know.

I'm puzzled why any player would choose to play for a Russian team given the invasion. But life must be more difficult with other sanctions, too. Hard to believe players don't have other options. Wasn't it in Russia where players were complaining that their pay was late? And that was before the war...

Anyway, France is getting hit by injuries and now these sanctions. When fully available it's the biggest threat.

Why did any foreign player signed the contract with any USA sport club, during the USA invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan :-? Have you ever been puzzled by that??? I mean innocent people have died in that war too, but I guess their skin was brown color so they don't count.

1. I didn't mean for my post to be political though it's baked into the situation. It was more about safety and financial implications, if ethics were not a factor.

Every war has inoccent lives lost. Not all wars are the same.

What is the point of the whataboutism? It's bad to support a country that is involved in war? Do players consider ethics when playing in China, Turkey, Serbia, etc.?

Guess they should all play in Switzerland, then.

Curious that you chose only USA as your focus. No agenda there...

But you had motives to impute so there's that.

2. If you can't see the difference between the two scenarios, perhaps you ought not veer the conversation in that direction.

There is optimism growing in Slovenia when it comes to Goran Dragić playing. With him and Čančar, Prepelič and the others back, Slovenia is a clear medal contender.

Also how would you guys rank the teams?

For me Serbia is the clear favourite. The ammount of talent they have is just ridicoulous. Also a nicely balanced team, with guys like Kalinić/Lučić to do the dirty work, and a great coach in Pešeć,...

The next tier for me are France and Slovenia.

Then Greece, after that Lithuania and Germany, if I would have to choose a darkhorse team it would be Croatia

I pretty much agree with your ranking with Serbia, Slovenia, France, Greece and Lithuania being the top teams.

Your darkhorse team Croatia didn't leave a great impression though when I watched them lose at home vs. Finland about a month ago.

Serbia didn't make it to the Olympics, but France was 2 tiers ahead of everyone other than Slovenia, also better than Slovenia, that game had no business coming down to last second block.

Surprising given the teams. Jokic is going for sure, but I'm sure he has more say about it:

I wonder would they have made final cut anyway, likely not. We can probably name 12 better serbian players (than Poku and Jovic) easily.

Surprised to see Serbia so low in the polls - thought that they had the deepest team and the best player in FIBA ball?

Wonder why Slovenia is so high as well.

From what we have see so far, I think Slovenia has the best player in FIBA ball, and that is why it is leading the poll. Serbia is right up there, everyone has the as final contenders.

IMO missing Bogdanovic is huge for them.

This could potentially be a really fun tournament and a great primer for the upcoming season.

True, Would have been a excellent experience for him.

He gets pushed around very easily, but he still contest and blocks post shots simply because he is so long. Guy defended Ante Zizic very well, and Ante is one of the strongest if not the strongest post player, I mean both physically and finishing wise. Ante could get deep position against Wembanyama very easily, but he still gets his shots blocked. Same happened to Louvergne, watching guys like
Louvergne and Zizic baby hook on Victor and getting stuffed was a good reminder why these two were NBA scrubs, while Victor is superstar prospect. Yes, Zizic and Louvergne are better EUro players now, but ability is not in their favor at all.

Also, I dont think he would have played C most of the time, he would have been Yabuselles back up

Actually zizic wasn’t as bad as people might have believed he was on those cavs teams, he didn’t get much burn, he had higher iq then his Croatian team mate hezonja.

A bit surprisingly, Zizic was cut, one out of 2 first names cut by Croats so far.

If Dragić plays then Slovenia has the best backcourt in Europe. Also guys like Blažič, Prepelič, Zoran Dragić, Nikolić/Samar are players who know their roles but can also score if necessary. The frontcourt is a bit lacking, but you can just ask Ucan how Edo Murić and Čančar destroyed Sabonis on defense the last time they played :D
Also Slovenia just has great chemistry together with everyone knowing what his role is, and that's huge in this type of tournaments.

The problem with France is that they don't really have an ofensive alpha IMO. Maybe it's Fournier, but that's a couple of dozen tiers bellow Giannis, Jokić and Dončić

As for Croatia,I think the addition of Šarić and Smith is huge for them. Dario, even if he was injured, is still a good/great FIBA player, and the most important thing is that they added a good guard. Their starting 5(Smith, Hezonja, Bogdanovič, Šarić, Zubac) is one of the strongest in the competition, with some solid players comming from the bench.
When it comes to Žižić, I actually like the decision. There was probably something in the background, but they also have Matković and Dario who both can play at the center Position.
I have them as a dark horse, becouse they probably finish 2nd(behind Greece, in front of Italy), and their group crosses with group D, where outside of Serbia, every team is beatable IMO. And from the quaterfinals on, it's an open road :D

Also the amount of talent this year is just crazy.

Its going to be revealing to finally see Scariollo have to deal with a CRAPPY roster for the first time in his life no matter if clubs of national team.
Now he can go prove he is not the overated crap i have always suspected.
Lets see him getting these mariachis to the semis.
