Weed should be legal, but it isn’t. She knows this. The people around her knows this. I would be SHOCKED if she wasn’t aware of the Russian’s thoughts on weed before she made a CHOICE to bring it with her anyway. Doesn’t mean I think she should be getting punished this severely but play stupid games…

She lived there for 6 years I’m sure she knew the rules. Russians taking advantage now and want to use her in a trade with the US. Joe Biden better not give up any first round picks to acquire her.

She won't actually serve the sentence. Russia has no use for her in jail, they'll just use her as a bargaining chip to do a prisoner swap with the US.

And yeah, she was very dumb to be over there in he first place. But at the same time, it's not uncommon for WNBA players or NWSL players to play overseas, including Russia, during the offseason in order to get more money. Hopefully this situation ends that practice though.

Yep, Russia is playing the same game as the most vicious country on the planet with an even longer history of wrongful arrests.

I feel bad for her in the sense that she had no idea what she was getting into but you commit the crime, you have to pay the consequences.

This thread will (justifiably) be locked soon, but I wanted to add that I fault Griner more for agreeing to return to/work in a country which has been historically anti-LGBTQ (including recent laws passed against this population) as well as historically discriminatory against non-white and/or non-Christian races--returning to Moscow weeks after Biden had announced that war was imminent and that US citizens should leave. (She arrived in Moscow, and was arrested, on February 17...six days before the Ukraine invasion.) How naive could a person possibly be?

Shes not in Brooklyn. Their laws and what they want does not reflect what we want or stand for. That's why were at war with them. Part of it is horrible timing. She did this right before the war. Part of it is Russia has not been friendly with the US.. Since.... forever... When your prisoner of another country you fall under their wants and wishes. That's just sad fact.

i hope so no American should be in Russia unless its to end a war right now.
