She won't actually serve the sentence. Russia has no use for her in jail, they'll just use her as a bargaining chip to do a prisoner swap with the US.

And yeah, she was very dumb to be over there in he first place. But at the same time, it's not uncommon for WNBA players or NWSL players to play overseas, including Russia, during the offseason in order to get more money. Hopefully this situation ends that practice though.

You seem to be weirdly focused on the "crime" of having a tiny bit of weed but ignoring everything else. Including the virtual guarantee that she has had weed in Russia before, since she has played there for half a decade.

They more than likely targeted her since she is a fairly valuable (at least politically) pawn. The bigger issue with Griner isn't the weed, it's that she was dumb enough to be over there in the first place during a war.

This is cruel though, the punishment does not fit the crime. At all.

It's Russia, a country that is invading a neighboring country just for the hell of it, a country that has historically been cruel to their own even. It doesn't mean it's fair but when you go to Russia with illegal substances in particular, you should know what you're risking.

It seems like some folks have this backwards so I just want to mention she was trying to leave Russia, not enter it. She got the vape stuff there and forgot about it. I kinda don't think it was intentional, like she was trying to get away with this heinous crime. She obviously would have disposed of it before her flight and just bought a new vape cartridge when she got home.

Again, this is Russia--there's a good chance that the evidence was planted, or that no marijuana was found. (I.e., they just made it up.) Confessions mean nothing there--e.g., she was probably lied to that she'd get leniency if she signed off on it, and believed this lie. Again, a very naive person.

We likely won't know the truth unless and until Griner is released--and they likely won't release her even after her nine-year sentence is finished. Why would they?

Lol, get over yourself., some "crime" is the last thing what its about, under normal circumstances cops would light one up with her, there is no way a basketball star in Russia goes to prison over weed, these girls go to Russia for a reason - They get paid and treated well in the rich top clubs, simple. But February 22 is a hell of a bad time to be carrying potentially dangerous for yourself., she should have known her status at the time.
