You seem to be weirdly focused on the "crime" of having a tiny bit of weed but ignoring everything else. Including the virtual guarantee that she has had weed in Russia before, since she has played there for half a decade.

They more than likely targeted her since she is a fairly valuable (at least politically) pawn. The bigger issue with Griner isn't the weed, it's that she was dumb enough to be over there in the first place during a war.

IMHO you are both correct. Russia is a corrupt dictatorship with no respect for individual rights.

She should also have been aware of the political climate and her high profile. Since the state dept has been warning Americans and discouraging travel there as well as many news stories about massing troops, even befor the war, a prudent person would have 1) not traveled there and 2) certainly not transported drugs into a drug intollerant country.

I lived in Japan and was well aware of many stories of naive young Americans getting long sentences for 'minor' drug infractions. And Japan is not in a status of active cold war against the US. I feel some personal accountability for being used as a tool for the likely release of a horrible person responsible for the death of thousands (by proxy as a arms dealer supplying terrorists) is in order.

To me, Vaping a controlled substance in Russia is beyond foolish. I remember travelling there in like 1990 and having soldiers search our luggage on the train and being pretty fearfull even without anything risky.

February 17: Midway through her season with UMMC Ekaterinburg, Griner flew back into Moscow after a brief return to the United States.

Well hell. Thanks for the correction. I'm very confused about why she had to go to Russia right then when she did not want to.

she commited a crime for gods sake, it absolutely doesnt matter how much weed she had or what type it was, its a crime

targeted or not, she gave them a legit reason to arrest her, if she was arrested for no legit reason, that would be injustice

im not an expert on russian law when it comes to drugs, so i dont know if the asked sentence (9 to 12 years) is justifiable by the law, but the fact is that weed is forbidden in russia, its a crime

If Britney wasn't a WNBA player would she even be swapped?

Some people are saying she might make it back before end of year. There have been some other US swaps with Russia but it took years to get those people back. The 150 or so days Brittney has been in detention is not really that long in perspective.

I'm a bit surprised her WNBA status which has been a pretty ignored league for most of the public, is making such an impact.

Bit ironic - trashes the USA for how unfair their legal system/etc is and then goes to a fullblown archaic near-totalitarian nation and is arrested for something that is mostly legal in the USA. (if you reply with the usual "but the usa is bad too!" then you don't understand what irony is)

Perhaps the USA ain't so bad relative to other countries?

80% chance she's swapped with another Russian and is back home soon.

so nothing new. Russia has long history of this. This isn't even mentionable by the things they've done.

You need a serious history lesson or 30.

Well they're using against the US which is a faaaaaar worse country when it comes to **** like that, so it's not surprising.

Surely there are some laws you disagree with and refuse to follow. Or do you respect every rule set before you, regardless of sensibility?

Come on man, you follow all the laws in a foreign country regardless of whether you agree with them or not.

Russia sounds like a complete craphole. Oh well, god knows I'd never go there. But if I did go there to make extra money, I probably wouldn't bring stuff that is illegal in their country. I mean, their laws are barbaric, idiotic, and stupid and all, but it's their barbaric, idiotic, and stupid laws.

Hope she makes it out ok. But we shouldn't trade her for the literal 'lord of war.' But if we do, hope she appreciates the US a little more

Lol, get over yourself., some "crime" is the last thing what its about, under normal circumstances cops would light one up with her, there is no way a basketball star in Russia goes to prison over weed, these girls go to Russia for a reason - They get paid and treated well in the rich top clubs, simple. But February 22 is a hell of a bad time to be carrying potentially dangerous for yourself., she should have known her status at the time.

She got 9 years so her value as a bargaining chip would be higher. Doesnt suprise me, Russia is a sad morally corupt place bereft of any standards, as are majority of Russians.

Wow, nice. Not only you're attacking hundreds of millions of innocent people that you don't know and that might be suffering those conditions you mention instead of supporting them, you're also very trigger happy when it comes to attacking other countries for corruption without telling anyone how are things like over there at HighHorseLand.

For context:

USA incarceration rate: 639 per 100k
Cuba incarceration rate: 510 per 100k
Brazil incarceration rate: 357 per 100k
Russia incarceration rate: 325 per 100k
Morocco incarceration rate: 238 per 100k
Mexico incarceration rate 166 per 100k

Chairman Mao was the worse mass murderer in history and is still revered in China. Guess the NBA doesn’t care about that though.
