No Rings Draft (80s to now) - R1 - durantbird vs Colbinii

Post#1 » by durantbird » Thu Aug 4, 2022 2:13 pm

Here is a quick list of what you need in your writeup.

1. Specific years for each player on your team
2. Rotations and minutes for each player
3. Reasoning as to why your team will win and/or why people should vote for you.

Do not vote in this thread until both managers have submitted their writeups. Please ensure you give a rationale for your vote; votes with no explanation will not be counted.

If writeups aren't posted within 24 hours, we will vote solely based on the players they have drafted (and any rotations they have posted on their roster page).

First to 4 votes wins. First to 3 votes wins if there has been no new votes for 24 hours.

PG: Luka Doncic 22' - 21.6 - All-NBA 1st, MVP (5)
SG: Doug Christie 03' - 7.0 - All Defense 1st
SF: Dan Majerle 93' - 13.4 - All-Star, All-Defense 2nd
PF: Grant Hill 97' - 15.7 - All-NBA 1st, MVP (3)
C: Arvydas Sabonis 96' - 9.9 - 37% from 3, 62% TS

Bench: C/PF - Myles Turner 21' - 9.2 - Blocks Leader
Bench: F - Dorian Finney-Smith 21' - 7.8 - 39.4% from 3
Bench: G/F - Stacey Augmon 00' - 3.0 - Defensive specialist

Rotation:
Luka 40 / Christie 8
Christie 28 / Majerle 12 / Augmon 8
Majerle 26 / Hill 10 / DFS 12
Hill 28 / Turner 10 / DFS 10
Sabonis 36 / Turner 12

Total min: Luka 40, Hill 38, Majerle 38, Sabonis 36, Christie 36, Turner 22, DFS 22, Augmon 8

87.6/88

vs

Steve Nash (38), Paul Pressey (10)
Reggie Miller (38), Paul Pressey (10)
Vince Carter (38), Paul Pressey (10)
Blake Griffin (40), Davis Bertans (8)
Rob Williams (34), Bo Outlaw (14)

- Our offensive flow will be superb. Luka and Hill initiating the offense and setting plays for each other along with the great passing of Sabonis, and great spacing across all positions with Luka, Christie, Majerle, Sabonis, Turner and DFS.
- Defensive assignments will be straight up, with Majerle and Christie switching on Reggie and Vince and sometimes helping with Nash. Luka is big and can cover Nash effectively especially with his 22' improved defense, and prime Hill is a great defender as well that can help with guards, forwards and bigs. DFS off the bench will help defensively and can guard practically every position, Sabonis and Turner will provide great rim protection.
- I feel like we have the more balanced group two-way wise, they'll have a hard time containing both Luka and Hill even with Pressey off the bench, and Luka-Hill have dangerous surrounding cast.

Steve Nash (2005) 11.4
Reggie Miller (1995) 13.5
Blake Griffin (2014) 17
Robert Williams (2022) 6
Vince Carter (2001) 22.3
Paul Pressey (1986) 10.5
Bo Outlaw (2003) 3.5
Davis Bertans (2017) 3.5

Total FGA: 87.7/88

Steve Nash (38), Paul Pressey (10)
Reggie Miller (38), Paul Pressey (10)
Vince Carter (38), Paul Pressey (10)
Blake Griffin (40), Davis Bertans (8)
Rob Williams (34), Bo Outlaw (14)

Offense

The catalyst of the team is Steve Nash and his playmaking complimented by two dynamic wings in Miller and Carter. Griffin and Williams act as two tremendous rim finishers for our offense while Paul Pressey provides crucial secondary playmaking off the bench.

We look to spam pick and roll with Nash/Griffin or Nash/Williams depending on the matchups. Nash's penetration will inevitably lead to open shots by Miller or Carter [both of whom are terrific shooters].

When we can run, all 5 of our players are terrific in the full-court. Carter and Griffin can attack the rim like no one else while Nash and Miller are lights out shooters.

Defense
Nash > Christie
Miller > Majerle
Carter > Luka/Hill
Griffin > Hill/Turner
Williams > Sabonis
Pressey > Luka/Majerle
Bertans > DFS
Outlaw > Turner

Overall
-Significantly better fitting talent while Luka/Christie/Hill are a bit clunky
-Much better shooters in Nash/Miller/Carter
-Mobile Center in Williams versus older Sabonis in the pick and roll helps on both ends of the floor
-Size advantage with Griffin against Hill

I'm not a big fan of Luka and Hill as a duo. With Luka's extreme ball dominance, I think any secondary playmaker you pair with him needs to be able to spot up off the ball for a good chunk of the game. Colbinii's theory is clearer to me with Nash and Blake running spread pick-and-roll, and Blake can make plays out of the short roll for Reggie/Vince on the perimeter or Timelord at the rim.

Durantbird certainly has a better defensive team in a vacuum, but there are some specific matchup issues with Colbinii (lack of a viable Blake defender, nowhere to hide Luka) that close the gap considerably.

I actually think units with either Luka or Hill flying solo would do well, especially with durantbird's stronger bench, but there's not much scope for staggering with both playing big minutes.

durantbird has the edge in defense for sure, with a Nash/Reggie/VC perimeter being fairly porous. Pressey off the bench certainly helps but he's only one guy. I also haven't yet bought in on the Rob Williams hype train, but I don't think it's a big deal against someone like Sabonis. But I just have a hard time with the Luka-Hill effectiveness. Both guys are killer with the ball, but neither is exceptional without the ball. This means they won't be at their most effective. Christie/Majerle/Sabonis/Bench is not much offense/scoring either. While Colbinii's defense gives me pause, his offense is significantly better than durantbird's.

Start with all-defensive 2nd team to Rudy Gobert.
He was the best defensive player on Boston.
The Defensive On/Off splits for Boston love Him, Tatum and Brown in the regular season.
96th percentile in Defensive EPM for defense.
Out of all Centers in the regular season he had the 2nd highest FG% defense when defending shots to Tony Bradley [Top 5 including Bradley, Allen, Gobert, Williams and Muscala with Bam and JJJ right there]. He ranked in the 96th percentile when defending the pick and roll [likely higher when counting for possessions] and 88th percentile in post-ups.
In 324 possessions against the Warriors he held them to a 103.5 Drtf with the next lowest BOS rotation player being Jaylen Brown at 107.1. The Celtics outscored the Warriors with Rob Williams on the court. Curry was -1.8 Points/100 with Williams on the court but +7.7 with him on the bench with an equal sample size [~120 minutes on, ~100 minutes off]. The biggest difference is the FTA, with Curry averaging less than 1 FTA when Williams was on the court per game but nearly 4 FTA when Williams was on the bench.

Enough of the statistics!

Ultimately, Rob Williams did all this on one knee in the post-season. He is arguably the most mobile defensive big man in the NBA currently, has the length to bother any penetration but also the quickness to not be exposed on the perimeter like Mutombo or even Gobert have been at times.

Colb’s offense is superior but his defense is very bad
On the other hand, I hate GH at the 4 and he’s a bad fit with Luka

I don't see durantbird having a strong enough defensive advantage here to make up for Nash/Miller/Carter/Griffin better offense. Vote Colbinii

GG DurantBird. Its been great with you hosting these games. I dont think any of the typical hosts get enough praise.

durantbird is away for a few weeks and I will be taking over running the rest of the game, not sure if he'd have even been able to continue if he advanced
