This is where I stand on all of this. I think being jailed over drugs is one of the dumbest laws we have. But I also understand that not everyone agrees with this and especially not every country agrees with this. Just like I think being jailed for being gay is very wrong. But I also understand that not every country agrees with that and if I were gay I would make sure I would avoid those countries. Just like if I wanted to smoke, I would avoid the countries with ridiculously strict drug laws.

To add onto that, I would definitely avoid countries with ridiculously strict drug laws that my home country currently has hostile feelings towards and that country feels the same back.

I think what Griner did was dumb. I think what Russia is doing is even dumber. But I also dont want to see us trade a war criminal for her either (yes I know the original trade deal was shut down). Because a normal citizen wouldnt get that kind of deal and our politicians would only be doing it for political points (no matter what side is in office).

Again, this is Russia--there's a good chance that the evidence was planted, or that no marijuana was found. (I.e., they just made it up.) Confessions mean nothing there--e.g., she was probably lied to that she'd get leniency if she signed off on it, and believed this lie. Again, a very naive person.

We likely won't know the truth unless and until Griner is released--and they likely won't release her even after her nine-year sentence is finished. Why would they?

She's in a Russian prison, unable to communicate with those around her, likely locked in isolation much of the day, with limited (once in the first two months) access to the Embassy and likely almost no other access to the outside world (e.g., the correspondence with her wife is either forged or heavily censored).

Griner's likely terrified and/or in shock. As you would be--indeed, as would just about everyone talking tough now on this board. I can see most of you "confessing" to various "crimes" within hours. Doesn't make the charges true.

If she confessed to something she didn't do in belief that she would be released soon (like you suggested earlier in this thread) then that's her own stupidity.

Who the hell cares if she said she hates America, an unjust sentence is unjust regardless of a stupid statement from the imprisoned.

This is **** insane, but Russia is a fascist hellhole and this is a political sentence so I am not too surprised. I hope this can bring more light to the Russian regime and their terrorist activity in Ukraine. Only silver lining.
