Just watched 'This is Spinal Tap' for the umpteenth time. It never gets old, still going up to 11 even after almost 40 years.

I wondered if it would be boring at first but a ton of exciting stuff happens in season 1. I wouldn't really call it sci-fi (it is in some ways but not others and it's a drama more than anything), but there are some cool scenes in space and on the moon etc. Very good story, well acted, suspenseful and worth a watch. I'm pretty hooked at the moment.
One of the best shows last decade imo.
I'm agreeing with you more and more as I watch more and more of it. Finished season 2 last night. Amazing.
I also took your rec from a couple weeks ago and watched The Bear. Really good, thanks!

I absolutely love all of Christopher Guest's mockumentaries. Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and A Mighty Wind are all fantastic as well.

'Best in Show' is probably my favourite. Fred Willard at his best.

Disney shills are out in full force praising 'Prey' as expected but sadly it is woke garbage. It's beautifully shot with a killer score and some great ideas. You can tell the director has talent. However, the writing is so over the top Disney and ruins it. They couldn't resist making her a massive Mary Sue. Some of the CGI is pretty bad too. The lead can act but she stood out because she was the least indigenous looking of the whole cast so it was kinda jarring. The accents were atrocious as was the decision to bounce back and forth between Comanche and English. It's a shame really. The concept is excellent and this really could have been epic if not for a few missteps and the woke writing. 5/10

She’s smarter, more capable and better at everything. She’s an amazing gatherer, hunter, warrior and dog trainer. Of course she’s told by everyone she shouldn’t be the hunter she wants to be and must overcome the patriarchy to show them! She perfects a knife throwing technique where a rope is attached to it for quick retrieval in minutes. She’s taught how to load a gun in minutes and is then able to duplicate on her first try in the most stressful of situations. She’s got plot armor galore. Fall 15 feet to the ground with her head hitting a rock? Nah, she’ll be fine. Get hit by the predator’s razor sharpe shield in the head, that moments before decapitated a guy? Barely a scratch. She figures out advanced alien technology to the point where she’s able to use it against the Predator to defeat him. Only SHE sees the signs and nobody will believe her! She’s the best tracker too! Shes 110 lbs and not only beats a Comanche warrior with his toxic masculity but also the giant murdering machine Predator. Despite the Predator hunting and killing up the food chain as different species identify themselves as threats he of course overlooks her because despite her clearly proving she’s an alpha threat, she’s a woman after all. I guess even Predators are misogynistic despite female predators being bad ass already being established as canon. Don’t forget the evil white French trappers!! It’s as woke as anything you’ll ever see. If this is palatable to you it means you probably watch MSNBC and ‘The View’

So in a movie about aliens who travel the galaxy trophy hunting, you had a problem with the believability of the main character being female?

This is not the first Predator film with a female lead who faced toxic masculinity while matching up with a Predator. Sanaa Lathan did that earlier.

There wasn’t any toxic masculinity in AVP. She’s sought after for her brilliance and is very respected throughout since she’s the expert. She’s not a Mary Sue like Naru from Prey

It just sounds like bad/lazy writing. I'm not seeing the wokeness. The main character can absorb blows that are fatal to other people and shake it off like it's nothing ? Oh no the horror, it's just what has happened in every action sequence in the last 100 years. Do you come here to rant about the secret agenda of writers when Ethan Hunt and James Bond get plot armor too ?

I watched the Prey movie last night, thought it was surprising good and really solid for an action movie about a murderous alien. I was very entertained and had none of the issues complained about above. Exciting and lacked the corniness of similar films. Not winning Best Picture or anything but for what it is I'd give it an A.

I explained why it’s woke succinctly. You’re just choosing to ignore the obvious. Plot armor DOES ruin lots of movies with male leads too so what’s your point? It’s not remotely only about plot armor.
You can have strong female leads who are badass but still more grounded in reality and without beating the audience over the head with political messages. Kill Bill, T2, The Matrix, Aliens, Avatar, animated Mulan, Black Widow, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and so many more have strong female characters with plot armor but they aren’t Mary Sues.
Atomic Blonde was done beautifully. She’s not overlooked and discounted because she’s a woman. She’s lethal and capable but yet gets her ass handed to her in hand to hand combat despite because of course she should. As do all the ladies from the above movies tbh.
In Prey she is so smart she’s able to use the Predator’s technology against him? Perfects an unrealistic knife on a rope trick in minutes. Learns how to load and use a gun she just discovered existed in seconds. Despite her tribe needing her to be a gatherer she manages to find time to train as an archer, tracker, warrior and hunter so she’s better than the boys? And nobody believes in her and the audience has to be told this a dozen times. It’s so unnecessary and insulting to audiences. Dumb fun is fine but people are praising this like it’s actually an excellent film with great acting and it’s laughable.
Mary Sues like in Prey, Captain Marvel, live action Mulan, Star Wars sequels and Birds of Prey ooze politics. It’s blatant, egregious and obvious. It’s pandering and pathetic. But they do it because it resonates with the MSNBC crowd which is NOT the actual fanbase for these movies and the reason they aren’t performing well. Hollywood is more interested in identity politics and pandering to the people who don’t watch their movies and it’s catching up to them. The MCU, Star Wars and DC have all suffered at the Box Office because of it. HBO/Discovery just took a $800 million write down to right their ship after they went too woke and are forced to course correct. Eventually Disney will be forced to follow

This wokeness is a disgrace. It’s only believable that an Austrian body builder could defeat a predator ( that had laid waste to a highly trained and armed special ops unit) …… using a wooden log. If only we could bring back the good old days.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

The movie was fun and literally had no overt messaging. There is no need to sully this movie with the tired Fox/CNN political narrative we are all sick of. Yes, some writers have an innate political bent whether it be conservative like Yellowstone and a mature viewer can enjoy it anyway. It was a fun reboot of a classic B movie set in another time and place with a faint link to one of the best characters in the original. Nothing amazing but worth the watch if you liked the original.

I’ve already spelled out the overt messaging. You’re just either receptive to it or are pretending to not notice it which is fine and your prerogative. I find it exhausting and it ruined what could have been a great movie. Instead of “dumb fun” which I’m positive Trachtenberg wasn’t shooting for, it could have been epic

I wonder if you might be a little heavy-handed in your critique but after watching this last night, I get a lot of what you're saying here. There's that one confrontation near the end that definitely speaks to your misogyny comment. They did hammer you over the head with the "she's not a threat" deal to the point of nausea. The film definitely has holes. For instance, the part about the gun is well taken. FWIW, I did read a review provided by a Native American Comanche person who loved the treatment of the cultural aspects of the film. I didn't think the film was that bad but it's squarely behind the first 2 Predator films and AVP pretty easily.
and that's "MR. Irrelevant" to you!!

Super clever
You make this movie sound like Don’t Look Up…..it’s not at all. Cliches …. Sure……political agenda…..doubtful. You don’t have to look at every thing in life like Tucker Carlson. A dumb sci-fi action movie is more fun without the paranoia coloring every scene.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."
