I guess the catcher was supposed to spread his legs to allow for a lane while he’s catching the ball? What a farce.

These Minnesota Twins fans screaming in protest evidently do not know the rules. That was the correct call on Sanchez. If the roles were reversed, I would agree with the decision if Kirk or Jansen did the same.

did he already block the runner before the getting the ball i didn't see the replay.

He stood on home plate, assuming a good throw from his outfielder. I guess you’re not allowed to assume a good throw anymore. Vladdy should stand 2 paces off of first base before the ball is thrown? Same treatment at all bases that way.

On the field-side edge of the plate is totally fine, but he had his foot planted on the foul-side. If Vlad did that at 1B, he'd be called for interference as well. There's a reason that first basemen go with the 'leap sideways and attempt a sweep tag' maneuver on wide throws...the batter/runner is entitled to the baseline.

He dropped his knee to block the complete path to the plate, is how I saw it.

And BTW, you can block the base on non-force plays around the diamond. I jammed my cleats in there as a barrier many times at 2nd. Or even your knee. Or even your whole body if you’ve got the runner by a mile and you choose to walk up to him. It’s interference if you don’t have the ball. If you do have the ball it’s all good.

Catcher was blocking home plate the entire way but then also dropped his knee to block Merrifield's foot on the slide before tagging him.

They're allowed to block after they've caught the ball. Sanchez dropped his knee before he caught it. You could argue it was part of the catching motion, but it looked to me like he was blocking preemptively so he can get the tag in once he catches the ball.

The catcher was Gary Sanchez, let’s just assume what he was doing was wrong.

They used to, back then. But it also lead to a lot of full-force collisions, as the runner pretty much only had the hope of knocking the ball out of the glove of the catcher. And that was dangerous for everybody.

So they changed the rule in an effort to avoid having large men run at each other at speed. Runners aren't allowed to body-check the catcher to get them to drop the ball and, in return, catchers need to give the runners a path to the plate.
