Wow, what a terrible player. He is atrocious, no other word for it. Guy doesnt belong, looked like a man from a street. Hey, you are 6'8, want to be in this game between 2 European powerhouses? Man, this was a guy who was arguably the best defensive player in EUroleague. Either something happened to him, or hes just aint cutting at this next level. Dude is a terrible athlete, awful, the only reason we aren't talking about him as a huge Euro stiff, is because he is not white. Guy has zero lift and zero skill, not a good combination. Can't believe I fanboyed over him so much 2 years ago. Someone here 2 years ago asked me is there another Luka Doncic on the horizon, and I said no, but I said, this guy Usman Garuba exist, he is Bam Adebayo with a 3 point shot... Yeah, that comparison of mine ain't happening anymore.

It was always obvious with him, that he was dominant in the youth competitions due to his mature body and physical strength , not his basketball skills. He was physically superior over the most kids in the competitions , he should never been first round pick, maybe late second round draft pick.

Additionally, I’ve found many of the Euro teams being discussed highly nationalistic, way more than the average American is, especially when looking at these Balkan rivalries. It seems like they’re always intense.

Every country is patriotic, just not in the same way often. We all know Americans are incredibly patriotic, but maybe less in sports, because in most fields they are heavy favorites, so most fans just take those gold medals for granted I feel. Also, America is very prominent country in most fields, so Americans don't need hang on to some national team, or boxer or strongmen super athlete to have some kind of international bragging rights. It is different for Philippines, where all they have globally known is Pacman, so everyone there cheers for him like he is god. Or in my Lithuania, where we are just randomly good at strongmen competitions (thank our men genes ), so we are just proud of that, because we got nothing else, we aren't politically, militaristically or pop culturally relevant, so we are just tune in to go crazy over our strongmen and basketball teams.
And yeah, I brought our strongmen team to low key brag, I feel pride we good at that, I got nothing to do with that, I am 5'9 midget who never benched anything heavy, but hey, it is our team, I feel that underserved sense of accomplishment It is like when AMericans or Russians say - you know, we saved your ass in WWII -. Like yeah mother f'er, YOU saved our ass.

Lithuanians also have very stupid word for basketball, Lithuanians in general try to ''lithuanize'' everything, a lot of people push back against it, we had so many stupid words for items and things that just either have international term or just accepted English term. In general, Lithuanian language, unlike Italian or English has very complex declension system, you really need to at least add lithuanian endings to basically every word, otherwise it would just not make sense. So, in Lithuania, LeBron James becomes LeBronas Jamesas etc. and that LeBronas Jamesas would have another 10 alternatives depending on the declension used.

In Lithuania, we call basketball - Krepšinis. Which is incredibly stupid when you think about, is that classic example of our linguists being annoying, but unlike some other words that get national push against, word ''krepšinis'' in Lithuania seem to be so old and rooted in our very culture, that no one really seem to even realize how kinda stupid it is, in Latvia, Germany, Russia, it is Basketball (basketbol, баскетбол, same thing), but only Lithuania, Italy, Spain, Estonia and Serbs seem to call basketball differently.

Greece or "Graecia" as the Latins/Romans came to call the ancient Greeks who settled in Southern Italy ('Magna Grecia') came from "Greco" the son of Zeus and Pandora. "Hellas" or "Hellenes" reference first came from Homer, describing the people from an area in Central Greece who were "companions of Achilles." For them it´s more important than winning a NBA title or the Euroleague.
It´s like Soccer I would say.
American players are specific because they´re more about winning NBA titles but that´s because NBA is so big in the US and for a long time NBA players weren´t able to play with the national team.
