Who has more trade value Mikal Bridges or OG Anunoby?

Post#1 » by Saberestar » Wed Aug 17, 2022 6:06 pm

I am really interested in this poll because to me these two players have about the same value around the league.

●Mikal Bridges (Phoenix), SF, 6'6, 210 lbs, 26 years old.

2022 1st Team All-Defense.
Contract: $90M/4 years.

Mikal's durability is off the charts and hasn't missed a game in the NBA.

● OG Anunoby (Toronto), SF, 6'7, 232 lbs, 25 years old.

2019 NBA Champ.
Contract: $56M/3 years.

His strength and agility allows him to defend 1-5 and he has improved as a scorer in the last year.

OG all day.
Younger, bigger, better contract, 90% of the D and can get a bucket on his own.

Should add the option for same. What OG does better around the rim, Bridges does better on the perimeter.

I didn't because everyone agree with the idea that they have about the same value BUT imagine that you have to get one of them in a trade...who would you prefer?

If OG can stay healthy, it's not particularly close in terms of trade value. Whenever it seems he's getting a rhythm, he gets hurt with some freak injuries. With that being said, Mikal's durability is really great. Although both are two way players, Mikals better on D for guards, OG's better on the forwards/centers. Really tough, but I give a slight nod to OG.

Offensively, Mikal has been the more efficient and consistent player in a smaller role. Raps have been expanding OG's offensive duties the past 2 years with sort of mixed results. I think if you put OG in Mikal's role, he'd be similarly efficient, but Raps have been getting him to iso, post-up, take 3s off the dribble. Mikal has been locked into his role next to Paul/Booker/Ayton as a low-usage shooter. In that role he's been a fantastic decision maker. He's a better passer than OG too.

Defensively, they're both elite but they basically guard different positions despite playing the same offensive position. Mikal's biggest impact comes as a perimeter pest who can chase elite guards. He's been able to spare CP3 and Book from a bigger defensive role. But he's too skinny to defend big star wings. OG isn't quite as nimble running around screens and disruptive contesting shots in those situations. But he's so much stronger/stouter. OG is a beefy wall who can guard 5 positions. He's probably the #1 defender I'd want guarding Kawhi/Lebron/Jimmy Butler types. Mikal defends the 1-2 better, OG defends the 3-5 way better.

OG is cheaper and younger, and probably has more upside than Mikal. Mikal was the better player the past 2 seasons though.

About equal. I would choose OG, seeing Bridges in the playoffs was not confidence inspiring.

I'd go with OG. Although Mikal has the 1st Team D to his name, i'd make the argument that OG is the more impactful defender against the superstar guards/wings in the league that either guy would be tasked with defending. He's a bit younger and has low annual contract that Mikal. With the most teams going small, having someone that can stay with guards yet switch onto bigs is much more valuable.

For as good as Mikal is on that side of the floor, he got absolutely torched by Ingram and Luka in the most recent playoff showing. I understand that you completely shut down these type of offensive guys but still:
Luka - 32.6pts & 7ast on 58.3%TS
Ingram 27pts & 6.2ast on 58.4%TS

Offensively it is a wash. Both guys are primarily 3-D and can make cuts to open spaces to finish. Both had down years shooting the 3ball with added offensive responsibilities but the one key difference is one team has CP3 at the helm and the other has Fred. Both guys can make the swing pass but obviously aren't responsible for really making plays for others.

I think they are very close on the court. OG is an extremely good defender
However, OG is way more injury prone whereas Bridges barely misses time. I would easily take Bridges for that reason.

Even if their impact on the court is similar, the difference in contract length and health is HUGE.

idk how anyone can still have a ton of confidence in bridges defensively after how he got barbequed in the playoffs by ingram and luka , hes just too weak for playoff basketball rn. Offensively, I think hes better. He knows his role and excels at it. OG still trying to find himself on that end.

ben simmons, andrew wiggins, kawhi got plenty of stops on him down the stretch of games 5,6 and 7 as well. you can make the argument that its a team game, but mikal couldnt possibly have more help than ayton cp crowder

Even as a Raptors fan I’d have to choose Bridges for the reasons you’ve stated.

-Bridges contract goes twice as long
-Bridges has better health

Both can be “win-now” championship contributors that’s for sure. I voted for OG mostly because of what I’ve seen with him as a secondary scorer, maybe third. I feel he can create a little better than Mikal.

I'm going with OG due to defensive versatility. He might be the most versatile defender in the entire league. A lot of players and analysts talk about being able to guard 1 to 5, OG actually does it and does it well.

the key differentiating factor seems to be health. If OG didn't miss 30% of the season every year, i imagine this poll would have been very close.
