Was Stockton ahead of his time with the short shorts?

Post#1 » by Big J » Mon Aug 22, 2022 2:42 pm

I remember him getting clowned for wearing short shorts back in the day. Now, it’s all guys want to wear. Was he ahead of his time like how MJ was with the baggy ones?

everything comes back around its weird. my dad is really old and as i grew up things he used to wear just randomly came into fashion. Puma tracksuits, short shorts. the moustache with no beard, right now the crocs. the long tees are in now, they were a thing in the 70s apparently, its really interesting talking to him about how the world is so cyclical culturally

Yeah and there are a limited amount of clothing styles that are practical enough to wear for everyday use so as long as fashion keeps changing, things are bound to come around and be in style again.

Stockton is my age. Those shorts are what we wore in highschool gym classes in the 1970s. Stockton probably grew up wearing those and just stuck with it. So no, not ahead of his time, just stayed with what he liked.

There's zero new things in fashion, if you think something is new you haven't searched back enough

Shorty shorts were around since the 50s, 60s, and 70s in the NBA - Stockton wasn't ahead of the times: he was hugely behind the times.

Even Magic vs Bird took place during the tail-end of the shorty-short era - they're practically briefs:

Soon NBA players are going to be running around in compression shorts. That's when the NBA will be at its apex. Once the NBA converts to compression shorts only, we will see a 1000% increase in female viewership.

And I think the reason that players started to reverse over time up to today is because it wasn't really practical, especially in the 00s when it went overboard with how baggy things were. If you're working out or exercising intensely you want your clothes to be as light as possible. It's crazy to think how thick the material used to be for basketball shorts in the late 90s and 00s and how much it's improved over time.

North Carolina State wore unitards back in 1989.

No he's was just the typical white guy who never updated his fashion choices from what was popular when he was 23. When he was 23 short-shorts were in so he wore them. If baggy shorts were in in 1986, he would have kept wearing baggy shorts.

It wasn't a fashion choice that explains his commitment to short shorts. It was apathy for fashion and an unwillingness to change from the style of his youth.

That was the norm in the 1980's when he was drafted. His might even be seen as long by 70's standards. So no...he was just someone purposely staying in his era and not adjusting for the style as it changed in the 90's....and given his age, not a shocker.

I dunno man, a bit more length and thickness isn't a bad thing when you fall...
