What's the story with Isaac?
Hi Magic Fans!
Outsider here, but curious about your roster and future. To me, the ideal rotation would look as follows:
Starters: Suggs/Isaac/Wagner/Banchero/WCJ with Anthony (6man)/Ross/Okeke/Bamba off the bench.
The closing lineup would like include Anthony for added offensive punch and move either Isaac or WCJ to the bench pending matchups.
The big question I have is what is the deal with Isaac's health? I know he signed a long term deal, but hasn't played since. Is there some clarity on when he is expected to return to the rotation?

Isaac will likely come off the bench and be under minutes restrictions.eitanr wrote:Hi Magic Fans!

He may not even be ready for the beginning of the season. He had hamstring surgery on the leg opposite of his ACL.
It's not that he probably couldn't play, they just like to ramp players up slowly.

What is his health concern exactly and why does he need a restriction? Is it to ease him back into the rotation? He seemed like a HUGE future piece a few years ago. His ability to guard and play nearly every position seems incredibly valuable in today's NBA.

Yes, they are going to want to ease him back slowly.eitanr wrote:basketballRob wrote:Isaac will likely come off the bench and be under minutes restrictions.eitanr wrote:Hi Magic Fans!

I think the main goal is to make it through the season healthy. He's still going to be in the rotation and could very well be our best player.

Ross won't play at all and you left out Fultz from the rotation entirely.
Pre pre-season, the most likely depth chart is:
Fultz/Anthony/Cannady
Harris/Suggs/Hampton
F-Wagner/Okeke/Ross
Banchero/Isaac/Bol
Carter/Bamba/M-Wagner
Many would swap Harris and Suggs, but this is basically the kind of depth chart Orlando will sport.
The big question I have is what is the deal with Isaac's health?
If Isaac is 100%, and Fultz returns to UW form, with hopeful wishes on Banchero on being a net-positive player, with reasonable F-Wagner and Suggs improvements, many here expect Orlando to very easily cover the 27.5 wins total and actually be a dark-horse for the 10seed.
It is basically unimaginable to most of us that Orlando will be anywhere near as bad as the national media portrays this team.

Re: What's the story with Isaac?
Does anybody have any ANY ACTUAL info about his status and expectations...
I really don't care to hear anyone saying "He will be brought back slowly", as if there's any basis for it. That's called speculation by a fan with 5% of the info the team and the player does. That's certainly welcome here, but I'm asking if anything REAL has been shared.

This is why I asked this group. I have not heard anything about Isaac.
Also - I clearly left out some key guys (i.e. Fultz/Harris). My revised version though would be:
WCJ/Bamba
PF Banchero/Okeke
SF Wagner/ Ross
SG Isaac/ Harris
PG Suggs/Fultz/Anthony
I do think Suggs is really a PG and needs to be trialed as such. Obv this would hurt Cole vs. Fultz. One probably needs to be showcased and the other has got to go. I think Isaac can be one the more critical players on the team. He was sniffing a DPOY before he went down. I don't see why he can't at least replicate what Herb Jones has done from NOP.
Back to Fultz vs. Anthony, health likely dictates the rotation there.

Re: What's the story with Isaac?
It is eye opening that the Magic are keeping their cards on Issac so close to the chest, it could mean one of two things in my eyes.
1. He’s not ready and not progressing as well as hoped.
2. He’s ready and looking a LOT better than expected. And the Magic are keeping a tight lid to perhaps make our team harder to scout. Let’s hope it’s this.
It’s going to be an interesting season, this season will determine who’ll be our long term guys 2-3 years from now. So I actually expect a lot of activity next off-season.

They've made comments about how it's a process. First, he needs to play halfcourt and then move up to full court.Skybox wrote:Does anybody have any ANY ACTUAL info about his status and expectations...

Thats SUCH a terrible lineup and would be painful to watch
Few things, Fultz is our best guard and hes not even in the lineup? Suggs as the only guard??? 3 forwards? No Wagner is not a SG and before someone says the offense would run through paolo, i love the guy but hes not Lebron or luka (yet?) and isnt a 6'10 PG. Also, Isaac hasnt played in 3 years and was only good one one side of the court, so to just bench guys like cole, fultz, harris or even Bamba for him is crazy

Re: What's the story with Isaac?
From positional pov, Isaac is PF and can't play anything but PF and maybe some backup C in very minor role on offense.
That being said, it's unclear is Isaac heading toward retirment or basketball games at this stage. Guy is 25 and there is strong possibility he is missing opening of third straight season.

Re: What's the story with Isaac?
Didn't Hammond, on a radio show, confirm the starting lineup as Fultz, Suggs, Wager, Paola, and WCJ. There is no way that Fultz doesn't start. Even with all his flaws he is still the best guard on the team. And regardless how much people want it, at the moment, Wagner, Paola, and Isaac can not play the 2 guard position full time.
In regards to Isaac don't know what is going on with him. With Wagner and Paola already on the team (and pretty much the future) don't see him being on team very long.

If the magic were forced to go with such a lineup it would be Wagner or Paolo playing the 2. However, I don't see it as likely.

What a 2004 take. This is position less basketball and you want to first ensure that unit can defend the opposing 5 man unit. Isaac played more wing (and even some 2) in his rookie year. Once he is healthy he can be a key to a strong defensive unit. Offensively you have a solid 1-4 option with Banchero/Wagner/Suggs/WCJ. Those 4 can help create and space for one another. Isaac would be more relegated to corner 3s, but shore up the D.
Then off the bench you add major scoring punch with Fultz/Cole/Harris and add Okeke/Bamba to shore up the D and interior.

Issac is not starting. He is not starting over Banchero and Wagner.
They will likely ease him into spot minutes as Orlando already has a glut of guards also needing minutes. They didn't overpay Harris to split minutes with 4 guys needing playing time (Isaac included).
Isaac cant stay healthy on the court. They aren't going to put him in a starting position right off the bat playing 'smaller', which he has never done successfully. Maybe this works in 2k?

Was Aaron Gordon exclusively a SF then?
I like Isaac at PF/C going forward, but he was all over the place despite this spreadsheet's "clarity"...it's not a black & white thing -he and AG were not complementary but dividing their positions down to a percentage point is unrealistic.
Someone mentioned him at SG...that's not happening - and I'm a big 'position-less/change the game' guy
