If The Knicks Include RJ Barrett In Any Trade, We Will Be Getting Fleeced

Post#1 » by OrangeBlueSkies » Thu Aug 25, 2022 1:15 pm

This would be a colossal mistake by New York.. We are already discussing 4-5 first round picks ( 2 unprotected), why the HELL would we be discussing RJ.

For what it is worth, it seems like the UTAH front office is ALL OVER THE PLACE. First, they have 0 RJ interest, now a month later, as per the wiretap, "Jazz Now Have Strong Interest In Acquiring RJ Barrett From Knicks". Oh really Utah? Well the Knicks have strong interest in acquriing Donovan Mitcehll from UTAH.... RJ, 2 unprotected picks for Mitchell would be a total overpay. There is STRONG reason to believe that Barrett is just scratching his surface as an NBA pro. Please Leon, let Danny rot.

Including RJ is actually the best thing to do. It saves us from giving RJ an albatross contract, we save more assets for a trade for a 2nd star, and lastly we get a major upgrade.

If they include 5 first rounders for Mitchell in general, Knicks are just dumb plain and simple. What is end game for them with Mitchell?

As the comment above yours states, the end game would be adding another top talent VIA trade once we land D. Mitchell. The goal would be to get Donovan Mitchell on the roster, while still having 2-3 assets that we could combine say with Julius Randle for a major upgrade. I know, it plays out like a good 2k22 session.

But where you get assets for second star if you give up so much for Mitchell? I don't know, Mitchell is just not worth it at the end IMO, I dont see how he makes Knicks instant superstar destination like some hope, I dont think that is happening. If you can get Mitchell for relatively cheap, ok, but Knicks are emptying a war chest here, which is just dumb.

I think including RJ in a deal with the Jazz would be a bad move (for the Knicks - Great for Utah)

The only offer we know is pretty cheap actually. Only 2 of the 5 picks are unprotected, and we’re adding in Obi and Fournier.

not trading for mitchell would be an idiotic thing to do and if they have to overpay, so be it

knicks are not willing to build the team through the draft, if they were, they would embrace the full rebuild like okc or rockets, theyve always wanted to compete, but have been unable to do so (bad ownership, incompetent front office), but if they get mitchell and with some other tweaks to their roster, they would become a playoff team, which would satisfy the ownership, front office and kicks fans and lets not be delusional here, being a playoff team means youre successfull

building a contender isnt an easy job, otherwise a lot of teams would win the chip and for a vast majority of owners, front offices and fans, being a playoff team is good enough... winning a chip is obviously better, but being a playoff team is surely better than being a non-playoff team, simple as that

I don't think they'd be getting fleeced. The mistake would be to undervalue him simply because they don't want to give him a big extension or because Thibodeau isn't particularly high on him.

Barrett, Quickley, Fournier, two picks and two swaps wouldn't be too bad. If Barrett is excluded, it's basically going to be two of their young guys and five picks/swaps. If I was the Jazz I'd be pushing for the Barrett package except I'd be trying to replace Quickley with Grimes.

It’s all about negotiation. Anyone is movable if the price is right.

(Except Randle…no one wants him)

RJ Barrett is a toughie

I like him. He’s a good player. He cares. He should improve.

He’s also not that impactful yet. He’s inefficient. He doesn’t finish well. He hasn’t shown the growth you’d hope for and in general has been a disappointment. Gun to my head I’d guess he retired with zero all star games.

So the question is, what’s better, unloading him for some value, or signing him to a long term leap of faith contract.

I like RJ Barrett but he’s the kind of player who will be on a contract 30% higher than he deserves and you need to bank on him getting better to earn it. That always scares me.

Who would be left who can play wing and actually defend?

Reddish (a big ?)
Fournier (awful defensively and probably in the trade)
Grimes (too small to guard SF)

Wouldn’t the Knicks be absolutely terrible defensively if they traded RJ? Even if the plan is to make a follow up trade for a star wing, who is even available?

For starters the endgame is to be competitive and make the Playoffs.

The Knicks are a joke and haven't been relevant for damn near a decade.

Mitchell at least gives NY a star who's capable of making them 2nd Rd material. Trade Barrett and don't think twice about it.

I'm just curious, are Knicks fans down on Barrett's potential ceiling now? What is exactly Barrett's ceiling?

When I heard the Cavs touched base with Utah on Mitchell then that Utah is now interested in receiving Barrett back in a deal my first thought was Barrett, filler (NAW?) to Cavs for Expiring (LeVert?) and picks.

Yes some of us aren’t that high on him. I personally didn’t even like him when he was in Duke. His ceiling seems like a Jerry Stackhouse type player
