https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/268426/Jazz-Motivated-To-Trade-Donovan-Mitchell-Before-Start-Of-Training-Camp

The Utah Jazz and New York Knicks are widely expected to eventually agree to a Donovan Mitchell trade, but the two sides continue to haggle over the terms. The Jazz traded Patrick Beverley to the Los Angeles Lakers this week in what was their first major move after trading Rudy Gobert. While Utah still wants a high asking price, they appear to prefer a resolution before training camp.

"The Jazz are beginning their business," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "They made their first post-Gobert move earlier this week when they traded Patrick Beverley to the Lakers.

"[Tim] MacMahon, you said I believe last week that you thought that the Jazz would make a Donovan Mitchell trade before the [regular season] opener. And it sounds to me in talking to people around the league that the Jazz want to try to go even sooner than that. They want to go before training camp."

"Of course," said MacMahon.

The Jazz have a first-time head coach in Will Hardy while they would also like to be in the running to have the best odds in next year's draft.

"It does sound as I talk to folks in the league that the Jazz are trying to apply the gas here. To try to juice the offer, especially juice the offer from the New York Knicks."

Thibs would give up the 3rd unprotected yesterday.

I would imagine it’s Aller that’s sitting there coming up with 12 different ways to protect it while simultaneously running query datasets to determine the likelihood of said pick turning into what caliber of player.

Yes he does. He can not go to training camp with Mitchell on roster.

The Knicks need to start talking to other teams about trading some of their picks and then leak it just like Ainge has been doing. Not saying they should be serious about doing it, but at least make it look that way to Ainge. That's how the game should be played against sharks like Ainge. Put pressure on him to think we're looking elsewhere.

just like no one takes CHA or WASH seriously either....

if they were intrigued by these other offers they would have leaked the offers by now to pressure the knicks. The fact they haven't leaked them is because the Knicks would laugh at it and probably drop there price

The last thing they are going to do is probably start leaking how much they love Tyler Herro and want to build around him for one final push to get the knicks to up the offer.

Dude is a hall of fame exec, and basically destroyed Billy King's reputation as well as this Minnesota GM's rep in a few years, when KAT asks out. I think we gotta be prepared for him to hurt himself to hurt us, rather than make a fair trade. He also hurt himself in Boston by refusing to go all in to get a star.

Obi, NYK '23, '25, '24 SWAP and our three picks from other teams along with Reddish, Fournier, McBride seems like a fair haul. I know we want to swoon over Obi (and I think he has really good potential) but Randle is a proven all-star, has a comparable (Zach Randolph) that aged well, and he fits in with how Thibs uses his power forwards (Boozer).

typically he doesn't...but in this case is his pivot really to just keep mitchell...there is so much risk to that down the road. Just being a toxic environment with a new coahc...potentially injury....obvious the most obvious is positioning themselves for a top pick which is an ideal start to any rebuild.

So probably at least another 2-3 weeks of this haggling...it's all good. Football starts in 2 weeks, and my son will be starting fall baseball as well, plenty to keep me entertained.

That worked out pretty well for the Lakers.

Horry was winning rings all over the place as a role player, a stretch 4 in an era when they were rare but he showed how valuable that role can be.

Teams need to set their rosters with vets, etc.

This needs to really happen before training camp. It's holding up a lot of vet signings.

Donovan MItchell was never going to be "ok" with going to Cleveland. It doesn't matter if he's under contract. No way would the Cavs come close to the Knicks offer (in other words "A LOT OF ASSETS") to land a guy that don't want to be there and that probably will look to force his way out. It's not worth the crazy ask from Ainge or the inevitable disruption that his unhappiness would likely bring. Being under contract just means that a player is legally bound to play for that team. Nothing says that he has to be happy about it or perform to the level he would if he was happy where he's at, nor work with his agent to try and get himself out, etc. That is absolutely something most sane GM's would factor in when it comes to putting together a package to trade for someone especially if you know even before you start the benchmark package is nuts. Same with Charlotte. Same with Washington. Same with any other small market team or team that is not on a player of Mitchell's caliber's list of "teams I'd like to be traded to". Not in the modern NBA where players have a lot more leeway and social acceptance when it comes to trying to force things in his favor regardless of contract or not. Sure Cleveland can still make a trade and play hard ball to "show the player who's in charge" but that's basically a "cut off your nose to spite your face move" that fans may love but no GM worth his lick is going to want to dive into.

Like I said, there is no team that can match the Knicks offer. the Knicks should hold steadfast at 2 unprotected FRPs and 2-3 protected FRPs. No other assets other that Fournier, McBride. With the Cavs dropping out Aller and Rose should lower their offer and tell Ainge that if he waits the offer will get lower... Shark Tank style.

that might be the biggest news for windhorst who seems locked in on Danny Ainge's thinking...saying not only he wants it down by the regular season but Training cam in basically a month...makes me think they are just haggling over the final pieces.

well thats no entirely true..its going to be more than that. Otherwise there are teams that can match that. Especially if the two unprotected are 2023 and 2025.

Miami sending 2027 and 2029 unprotected beat that above offer with Herro.(along with 2023).

So its gotta be more than that.
