Donovan Mitchell Traded to the Cavs

Post#1 » by Inigo Montoya » Thu Sep 1, 2022 8:14 pm

Ainge doesn't mess around. A lot of egg on the Knicks' faces.
Utah will acquire three unprotected first round picks and two pick swaps from the Cavaliers as part of the trade. The Jazz will also acquire Collin Sexton on a four-year sign-and-trade as well as Lauri Markkanen and Ochai Agbaji.

The picks going to Utah will be in 2025, 2027 and 2029 as the Cavaliers already owe a top-14 protected pick to the Indiana Pacers in 2023.

Knicks messed up. Checkmate for Danny Ainge. Got the rebuild pieces for the future. Good job.

I am happy with it. I can't imagine him staying there after this contract.

A lot of people were skeptical and unhappy with the Ainge hiring. I hope he put all the the doubts to rest. He did a great job.

Yup, well done to Utah here, a great trade under the circumstances. And you guys still have so many assets to move as well. You might just be the most interesting non-winning team in the league this season

I'm happy with it, and excited to see what follow-up trades are going to happen in the next few days.

Color me surprised. I thought the Cavs were not only no longer a player, but questioned whether they ever were very serious about trading for DM. I like it, though, I have to wonder if the Knicks picks wouldn't have ended up being better.

The deal works, but the Jazz are receiving a lot more salary ($5M-$8M)- I wonder if another Jazz player is going to the Cavs to even it out.

See... this is EXACTLY what I meant. The Knicks had the most they can offer... but ONLY if they actually offered some of the good stuff they had. They pretty much offered the worst picks, the worst young players and relied that volume would make them the favorites. This is NOT how things work. If you look at what Ainge did with the Gobert trade it was obvious he was prioritizing picks that can actually turn into something good(unprotected picks far in the future + pick swaps far in the future). What did the Knicks reported offer include - early picks with limited potential for high end upside. What did the Cleveland offer include - ALL the unprotected picks they could have offered, two of them in 27 and 29(those are gold) and 2 picks swaps(again the two pick swaps furthest away in the future!!!). Then add this year's lottery pick Ochai Agbaji and a player Ainge seems to love in Sexton(there have been rumors about the Jazz wanting him for 2 months - initially not connected to Mitchell trade but now included in that trade) and this offer become sooooooooooooo much more appealing than what the Knicks were offering.

I love this trade. Au revoir Donovan and have a nice day Leon "Mastermind" Rose.

Great trade for Utah! I think Sexton can be Mitchell lite and he’s two years younger. Add VW to this team and we are going places.
Ingles is cooked.

What New York was rumored to offer was better than this.

I don't think taking a bit more salary matters. We are tanking and a bottom feeder for the next few seasons, we're not in a position of desperately needing extra cap space like we were when we were a "contender".

As for the trade partner, I think that unprotected picks from the Knicks are more valuable because historically the are a team more likely to implode and the Cavs are on their way up, but I can't be upset with this haul.

I expect Bojan and Conley to be moved next, possibly Clarkson as well. I also think that Lauri and Sexton and probably a few other players we got via the trades will not be on the Jazz long term and will likely be traded in the course of next two seasons or so.

That said I don't hate it, I would just prefer 2 unprotected Knicks picks and three protected pucks to three unprotected Cavs picks and some swaps. Players in the deal don't do a ton for me, but we will see. Not excited to watch them play at all.

No it wasn't. The Knicks reportedly offered their worst picks(23 and 25 unprotected + 3 highly protected picks) and their worst young players(Topin + Fournier). The Cavs offered everything the Knicks refused to include - the most valuable picks ... ALL OF THEM UNPROTECTED, the most valuable swap - ALL OF THEM UNPROTECTED. Then they added a lottery picked player this year and a player Ainge seems to love in Sexton.

This is precisely what I meant when I said the Knicks can offer the most... but ONLY if they actually offer most of the good stuff. If not - other teams are firmly in the game. And this got proven right unquestionably today.

Danny Ainge right now after the Knicks tried to play hardball:

Good luck Donny! Cleveland is a much better fit for him, and will be more successful than the Knicks.

I am happy with the trade, and I like this package more than what the Knicks were rumored to offer. Better deal IMO.

If the Knicks package were actually better than Ainge would've taken it.
Obviously Knicks were not offering all their premium picks.
Training camp kicks off in a few weeks and the team really didn't need this cloud hanging over them.

I think Ainge did a great job especially when you combine the assets from both big trades this summer. By the end of last season it was obvious the Gobert/DM pairing had gone as far as it was going to go.

Hopefully Jazz get their new franchise player in the next draft. They will already have some nice young pieces to surround him with in Kessler, Vanderbilt, Markkanen, Sexton, Agbaji.. I've heard Marrkanen, Sexton, and Agbaji are all really good kids too.
