Josh Jackson to Toronto

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Wed Aug 31, 2022 10:29 pm

Jackson signed a contract with the Raptors on Wednesday, Doug Smith of the Toronto Star reports.

A lottery pick back in 2017, Jackson hasn't lived up to the billing to date. However, he's still just 25 and will compete in training camp to nab one of the Raptors' final roster spots. He played for two different teams -- the Pistons and the Kings -- during 2021-22 and averaged 6.4 points, 2.8 boards and 1.1 assists over 16.3 minutes per tilt.

Breakout season coming. :D
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I liked Josh, although he at times would seemingly just be going through the motions and he never really consistently hit from outside. Decent defender and shot blocker for a wing and versatile defensively as well.

He's a minimum salary guy, but his full year here with us in the 20-21 season with 13.4 PPG, 42% from the field and 30% from three is still better than what we've seen from Hayes.

One of my least favorite Pistons ever.

I wish him no ill will. But I’m very glad he’s gone.

I’ll add that it’s another example of “if you’re picked top 5 you’re going to stick around for a while in the league even if you’re bad.”

Oh, except for Anthony Bennett.

Didn't they waive Svi to make room for Josh?

It's kind of a bummer. They guy ran like a deer and had springs to match but could never play with consistency for any stretch. Guys like this make you appreciate how important the mental approach is to the game of basketball. Some people just have such a hard time with it.

He never looked like he was having fun out there. All I saw was resting idgaf face when he played....

There's soo many former Pistons that I liked less than Josh. It's really not hard to come up with a list...

Smoove
Alvin Robertson
Glen Robinson III
Austin Daye
Henry Ellenson
Saben Lee
Allen Iverson
Darko
DNP CV
Andre Drummond ( I just can stand people doing knowingly stupid things on a basketball court over and over).

I can understand everyone else, what’s your issue with Glenn Robinson III?

It's amazing isn't it? Mental toughness, love of the game, and a high-motor are now more important to me than natural talent. Countless times you get these men, that have almost no drive, no passion, and no willingness to improve, but just sit on their talent like a big fat rooster.

This is what makes players like Jordan, and Bryant so damn good. Talent plus drive=greatness.

I actually like Josh, but he doesn't have that drive, not even an inkling of it. He has amazing physical attributes, but never improved his shot, or handle.

Bums me out man.

There was a game right at the beginning of Blake Griffin's tenure where GR III was on the court and did something stupid. I think it was something like shooting the basketball instead of dribbling out the clock or not intentionally fouling or whatever. (I don't recall the specifcs, sorry)

The announcers pointed it out during the telecast that Blake was calling for the same thing during the play as well. After the game (which the Pistons got lucky and still won) Blake (the assumed team leader) went to go ask GRIII why he didn't do as requested. (The postgame reporters were nearby so this was all mic'd and videotaped). GR3 just sort laughed off the fact that Blake was upset he wasn't playing smart basketball at the endcand walked away.

It's just a lasting memory for me of a guy not really taking his profession seriously. So yeah. That's why I didn't like him as a Piston.

Edit: it was actually the opening night game. Pistons were up 3 against the Nets with 6 seconds left. Nets had the ball. Duane Casey and Blake both called for the intentional foul. GR3 didn't follow instructions. The rest is as I explained above.

This link points to a news article that mentions the instance briefly in the Q&A section.

I seem to have repressed a fair amount of this era, but I remember them both annoying the crap out of me. It was still only a handful of years after the Goin' To Work era had ended, and man it was depressing seeing how quickly the team descended from annual contender to cellar dweller with no future.

The only problem with Alvin Robertson really was that he was replacing VINNIE JOHNSON, Who was gonna do that well?

Yeah. The fact that Robertson tried to strangle the then-current vice president of basketball operations (Billy McKinney) wasn't problematic at all...
