Well, Rebel, you've always been hopeful with Vltko, perhaps this is his year. The World Games may be his catalyst
Hopeful? Cancar is a late 2nd round pick on a minimum contract that has proven to be a solid contributer as an end of the rotation substitute when called on. He shoots well, doesn't make many mistakes, is a solid defender, has a great attitutde, and is reportedly our franchise players best friend on the team. The only place I am disappointed is in his injury issues, but I have to know what more do you expect from a late 2nd round pick on a minimum deal?
Since you're taking umbrage here, let 's examine his career. Yes, he was a late 2nd round pick, yet was taken ahead of Monte Morris, who truly did turn out to be a true solid contributor. Rumor has it he was also taken at that spot as a "favor" to his agent who had ties to Jokic, rather than on his own merit, many were a bit baffled by his selection even that late in the draft. But to call him a solid contributor seems a bit of a stretch at this point when he's only averaged 7 minutes a game and his production of a mere 1 basket (avg) isn't jaw-dropping. And at that few mins per game, if his defense was stellar, on this team he'd of surely got a few more mins based upon the defensive needs of this team. While I agree he has a great attitude, it's hard to see where he'll get more minutes, I can't say I've seen enough offense or defense other than FIBA play to justify it yet. I honestly did see a lot of improvement last year before he got hurt, so I am hoping he gets some better PT from Malone. He's young enough still that I hope we get to see more from him.
Once again Monte Morris is an outlier, not even close to the average 2nd round pick. 25% of all 2nd round picks never make it past NBA training camp. only 2/3rds of 2nd round picks ever play a minute in a real game. Less than half of all 2nd round picks make it past 2 years and only 1 out of 5 are in the NBA longer than 5 years. The average 2nd round pick is Cornelie, not Morris, who is in the top 5% of guys who are drafted in the 2nd round. So once again the fact that even you admit that Cancar has had stretches of capable play in the NBA not only shows he has exceeded realistic expectations, those supposed draft experts raising their eyebrows at his selection were wrong. Cancar is clearly above average for a 2nd round pick, and considering he was a late 2nd round pick he is well above average for expectations.
I didn't say that he was providing stellar defense, I said he provides good defense, and he does, but he has also been buried behind both Greens, Nnaji, Gordon, and MPJ. We all know that he is going to have to clearly outplay at least 2 of those guys to get any kind of minutes, and considering he was a part of the rotation before getting hurt in each of the last 2 years, I would say that he has outplayed them enough to say he is worth a minimum contract and a roster spot.
