Or with Jokic or with Giannis. Now the fun starts.
Jokic has never won anything in his career.
You mean other than a couple of NBA MVPs?

I believe Serbia is a favourite, I was just answering previous poster. You can't say that he's a proven winner, if he didn't win anything in his life.

I dont think anyone has ever won a championship with half their cap space sitting on the bench injured, not even Michael Jordan could do that.Bob8 wrote:Pachinko_ wrote:Bob8 wrote:

It's a miracle he got as far as he did.

It's Eurobasket, so winning in Europe matters too. He didn't win anything even in Serbian league or in in youth competitions.

WRONG - he WON SILVER MEDALS in 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, and in 2013 Czech Republic U19 World Championship. And silver medals are won. If Slovenia manages to win bronze this year, we will still say they won it.

Tell me, if Slovenia beats Serbia in semis and then you win bronze. What would be reaction in Serbia? Like you have won something?

Some would say we won bronz, some would be unhappy. Some would say we didn't win gold in 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, but some were happy we won silver after losing to US team with top NBA stars. Like being better than the rest of the world, except US is not bad. All depends of perspective.
Like some may say Luka is a looser because he didn't win anything in the NBA, can you imagine. But I wouldn't
Anyway all this conversation started when someone stated "I think Serbia is too strong, Greece probably too but as history has taught us, never count out a team with Luka"
I answered in a good spirit "Or with Jokic or with Giannis. :D "
That is when you jumped in with your BS. So it is time to stop.

In 2017 nobody said that you have won something. It was just total disappointment that you have lost the final.
What BS? I just stated the fact.
Whoever plays for Serbia is always in great position to win a medal, because Serbia has always very good team, but when you have a player like Jokic only gold counts.
Serbia is a favourite, not only because of Jokic, but because you have Micic, 2 great 3&D players and very good backup C.

Now I totally lost what is your point. You want to say never count out a team with Jokic? Yes I agree. I would only add that you should never count out team with Luka or Giannis too.

No I don't think Europeans have the "only the winner matters" mentality, that is an NBA thing.
Medals matter, participation matters, people want to see basketball in their countries get better every year, they want to see new talent coming out, more kids playing the sport, more star power coming back from the NBA to participate in tournaments like this one, and more people watching it. Gold is gold of course, but everything else matters too.

No, I want to say anything else would be a huge disappointment for Serbia. We don't know, if we can count on him until he wins something.

Joke aside. There's a big difference between Slovenia and Serbia outside Luka/Jokic. Luka had to score 83 points in back2back games for 2 Slovenian close wins. Tobey out, Muric on 5 against France. It's basically Luka having huge game or bust. Greece is in some degree similar, but still has better roster overall. Serbia has the best roster overall, so they can survive even with only solid Jokic. Other 2 can't.

Not in Serbia. Losing in 2017 against Slovenia was like national disaster.

Not in Serbia. Losing in 2017 against Slovenia was like national disaster.
By the time you make finals, and are favorite, sure. Losing any final hurts. But if before tournament they just said - you get silver medal, no one would have said its ''national disaster''.

I can guarantee you that anything but winning will be treated as bad in Serbia this year too.

I disagree, for example, I've seen posts and talk here in Croatia how we've done well to avoid Serbia and who are we gonna play in the semis (lol

In addition, there is a general belief that ony winners count, in this situation, where basketball in Croatia has been reduced to a shadow of what it once was, nobody expects anything from this team. Btw, Croatia lost just recently to Finland in a bizzare fashion and was eliminated from World Cup qualifiers so that matchup is 50-50 imho.

What's the story with Latvia.
Aren't they better than various teams that were at this tournament?

Didn't qualify, like Slovenia didn't qualify for last WC. Fiba has those stupid windows, where players from Nba and Euroleague can't participate. You're basically penalised for having good players playing in better leagues. For example Croatia is already out of next WC after only the first phase of qualifications, Serbia is in bad position and Slovenia might have some problems too. Turkey is almost out....

Oddscheckker has the win for Croatia 52% and the win for Finland 44% (I suppose the missing 4% are the betting companies cut), which is indeed pretty close to 50-50.
