People seem to hate the idea, but let's be honest, cup/tournament games are much more fun than regular season games in any sports. "But it will feel meaningless". They won't say that when teams suddenly give everything they got like they do in the playoffs. Or right now, in the EuroBasket tournament. The haters just hate change or anything new.

Re: NBA's In-Season Tournament Would Feature Eight Teams Advancing To Knockout Stage
I still see no substantive incentive players. The idea for the 'qualifying' games to simply be heightened regular season games is good, but why should the players care about the tourney itself? Money? Even 6-8th men in the NBA are making obscene salaries now, the $1m bonus per player on the winning team is not enough to incentivize the best guys to care, in my opinion.
It's a neat idea but the NBA already suffers from too many regular season games. I would be a bigger proponent of it if they would just do what's right for the sport and cut the regular season back to 66 games (play everyone twice and division opponents four times).

Sure why not? I don’t see a downside from changing up the monotonous regular season, specially with how meaningless the regular season before Xmas seems to be.

Aside from making scheduling difficult, the top 8 teams have to play against each other while other teams play against the 22 worst teams in the league, so a team has an easier schedule if they don’t make the tournament, and on top of that the final teams have to play more games.

Dumb. No one wants this.
If they have to switch it up use the MLB style series idea. That’s way better.

Re: NBA's In-Season Tournament Would Feature Eight Teams Advancing To Knockout Stage
How are the 8 teams going to be chosen? I figured it would be the top 8 teams in the standings but it sounds like the field of 8 will be determined before the season starts. It says the tourney is part of the regular 82 game schedule and these teams won't be playing more games than the other 22 teams (aside from 1 potential extra game for the tournament final). So they'll have to set the field when the schedule comes out for everyone. I'm not really getting it if I'm being honest.

Re: NBA's In-Season Tournament Would Feature Eight Teams Advancing To Knockout Stage
Say the NBA guarantees a playoff spot for the winner of the tournament (I’d be surprised). That sounds good. But then if a fringe team like, let’s say the Pistons, win, why would they not rest their best players more often to be best prepared for the guaranteed playoff spot? What other prize could they come up?

No, they will just show up. Of course, they will care. Why wouldn't they? Grown men play in basketball tournaments all over the country and nobody cares, but the players give it all. Why wouldn't hyper-competitive NBA players do the same thing when all eyes are on them?

I wish you guys could come to Europe and tell all the soccer fans that they are wrong. It should only be one regular season and then a tournament. Everything else is meaningless.

It’s an insignificant beginning of season playoffs where most teams won’t even be in peak form yet. This is another desperate cry for viewership from the nba because they refuse to fix the real problem which is broken product

There’s no additional reasons for veteran team to try win this . No extra playoff rights etc why would clippers , suns , warriors , want to win this . Or sixers , heat , Boston still young ,

Just because it works for soccer in Europe doesn't mean it's going to work for the NBA in the U.S. There's literally no sports league in the US that has a midseason tournament like this, fans and the majority of players aren't used to it. So you're operating under the same wrong assumption that Silver is that just because it works for one sport on a different continent, it'll automatically work here.
As you can see, just in this thread alone you're in the minority, and these are fans who care enough about the sport to post on a message board. I can't even imagine how little the casual fan is going to care about this.
You're entitled to your opinion, but there's no way you can just throw in a tournament in the middle of the season, one that apparently has no incentive for the winning team, after 75 years without one, and expect anybody to care.

Remember when Pop sat out Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili for a nationally televised game against the Heat and the Spurs got fined?
Since then how many times have stars sat out games that have been nationally televised?
Jimmy Butler went to an all-star game and didn’t play in the game.
