Re: Emoni Bates
Emoni was just always vastly overrated from the start tbh as people fell in love with the highlights showing a tall rail thin kid who developed early making contested jumpers against overmatched competition. If you squint your eyes, it was KD-esque. But there were so many red flags. His physical attributes and abilities simply sucked. Horrible frame, strength, and length for his height. Downright terrible athleticism. And he didn’t offer enough in terms of skills or feel for the game to compensate for what he lacked there. He was mostly just an isolation scorer, and that all worked when he was taller than everyone and not facing elite athletes. But not so much at the next level.
Going to a different program might have helped a little, but he was never going to be worth a lottery pick. Any team picking him in the first round next year would be dumb and simply buying into the outdated high school hype.

Re: Emoni Bates
he just doesn't have much room for error at this point, he needs to shoot at least something like 45/37/75 on considerable volume, put together a positive ATO ratio and just produce.
there is still a chance he can be a first rounder and productive NBA player, you still can't teach 6-9 and he does have some sweet ball skills and handles for someone that tall, but if that's all there is it wont matter. gotta start hitting those shots at much higher clips especially simple things like free throws because he's not gonna offer much elsewhere.

He's in a fairly interesting position.
There's always guys highly ranked in high school that end up underperforming in one way or another and, from my experience, they typically go one of two ways; either it's a humbling experience and they grow from it (i.e. Naz Reid or Jaden McDaniels) or they continue down the same self-destructive path that got them in their predicament in the first place (Shabazz Muhammad).
I'd always want to bet on the former because it's always more interesting seeing someone overcome adversity...but I wouldn't bet on it either. So I think even a "good" season from him makes him a 2nd round pick. Hopefully that's enough of a wakeup call to cut his apparently toxic father out of his career and allow him to shine in a role that actually suits him.

Re: Emoni Bates
Guys always taking a ton of tough, contested shots at low levels should always worry people. At the end of the day, the most valuable skill in basketball is getting the easiest possible efficient shots, and when a guy is constantly taking tough ones in high school and making these "kobe-esque" highlight reels, he's either:
1)incapable of creating better shots consistently, which is a bad sign
2) or has no perception of what a good shot is, and will have bad shot selection.
For most guys, it's the first.

Re: Emoni Bates
Disagree that he is incapable of creating better shots. We are microanalyzing his game too much considering the reclass. He can easily do that with the development of his handle, the only aspect of his game that is likely helped by the disappointing wingspan. He needs to actually work on his game and not rest on the prior hype. He isn't lotto and he needs to show a decent amount to get into round 1. Needs to reframe his mentality, step back and put in the work.
From the outside, it seems like he believed his own hype too much. If I am correct about this, he will never get there. Stop listening to the voices in his ear and grind.

Bates isnt close to an NBA player.. the only reason people are still harping on his game is because he was compared to KD at 15.. Everyone doesnt have to play in the league and he'll goto Austrailia and do well

Re: Emoni Bates
I havent viewed him as a potential 1st round pick since I first started seeing him play in college. Im pretty sure he is at the point where he better hope a team takes a flyer on him in the 2nd round. I sure as hell wouldnt.

He’s an 18 year old who has bad people advising him. We need to give the kid some benefit of the doubt here. We all did dumb **** when we were 18.

Re: Emoni Bates
it's not really that hard NOT to get charged with a felony
im pro gun ownership but you don't scratch off a reg # on a firearm not legally bought by you and then conceal it...just stupidity, and his stock doesn't allow him to do stupid ****.
he has way too much on the line to be acting like a clown. what are you doing riding around with a concealed weapon anyway? go play basketball.

He better have a hell of a year now. I would say his odds of being a FRP and close to 0% unless he’s just unbelievable and dominating.

Ya, this isnt kids being kids. This is sketchy as hell.
Kids being kids is getting caught with weed, hell getting caught with MDMA or even cocaine. This is a charge that just screams 'I am making all the wrong decisions possible'.

This guy is done. No way he gets drafted. His best hope is some GM decides to bring him in as an undrafted FA due to his HS hype.

Still think you guys are going too hard on an 18 year old kid. Think about the sketchy people around him. At his age he probably knows jack **** about gun laws. You can't just put this all on the young man's shoulders. Someone is giving him bad advice.

How do you know he personally scratched off the reg#? Someone else could have scratched it off and gave it to him as a gift. Kids are dumb and don't know better if they have been playing ball all their life.

The law doesn't care about who tampered with the serial. The law cares about Bates driving around with unregistered firearms with no serial numbers.
