Harder to evaluate talent. More busts.

Imagine drafting Jaden Hardy or Emoni Bates with a top 3 pick in the last draft. Teams were able to accurately evaluate them last season.

Better follow up question, how many 18-19 year old rookies are actually massively contributing year to year on their respective teams? Maybe 3-5% of all drafted players per year?

That’s misleading. Better question is how many rookies PERIOD contribute “massively” year to year? Very few. Rookies rarely have big impact day one whether they are 17 or 22. The idea of “NBA ready” is a myth for the most part.

It’s an arbitrary thing, with tons of variables. For example are you sure Bird and Magic wouldn’t have also dominated right out of HS?

Rookies tend to need 2-3 seasons to become higher impact unless you’re HOF level like LeBron, Duncan, Bird, Luka etc.

Do you believe that the more recent drafts had any less busts, or were better than the 95-2005 drafts (or whatever the exact years were)?

I personally rank the 2018 draft up there with the best ones ever, but outside of that, no incredible draft classes lately IMO. 2021 and 2022 were hyped forever and didn’t deliver much IMO for example.

Right, so what is the drawback to having newly drafted 18 year old rookies play with their teams g-league roster for 1 season before throwing them into starter minutes? It benefits the player and the g-league more than the owners. It also gives teams more time to craft rosters. Nobody is advocating to take their pay or treat them like college players.

Every draft is different. Some have a huge amount of busts and some do not. Even the guys that become "great" take 2-3 seasons before really accomplishing anything regardless.

Like a previous poster stated, this is all something the NBA is probably discussing.

I'm for this if it actually means the G-League continues to be a true minor league system similar to baseball. I was never really a fan of the one and done and as a college bb fan I selfishly wanted either declared out of high school or minimum two years but I know that was never in the player's best interest. I'm still actually curious how the NIL rules will affect this because I wonder will you still have guys who will go to college especially if they're not lottery picks.

It was great for the NBA. The 18 year olds replace 34 year olds not 19 year olds. We get more younger talented players filling out rosters rather than washed players.

Going to be a lot of undrafted 18 year olds.

Are they even allowed to play in college if they go undrafted? I feel scholarships would be gone by them, teams would have already filled their positions.

Randolph Morris did this by not signing with an agent. He declared for the 2005 NBA draft but went undrafted. He returned to play for Kentucky and left to sign with the Knicks in 2007, as a free agent.

Apparently the NCAA also added some more changes to the rule in 2018, that allows undrafted players to go back to college.

Now, players can go through the draft and have the ability to return to school if they go undrafted, as long as they inform the school’s athletic director by 5 p.m. the Monday after the draft. Say Maryland’s Kevin Huerter, for example, didn’t get drafted in the first two rounds — he’d be able to play for the Terps again.

This change is effective if/when the NBA and NBPA make an expected rule change, which would make undrafted student-athletes who return to college after the draft ineligible for the NBA until the end of the next college basketball season.

That's basically all of the kids we're talking about though. Within the context of this thread what does it matter if other student athletes are staying all 4 years. We're talking highschoolers going to the NBA who are forced to do a pointless year of college that they get nothing out of. All while making the NCAA boatloads of cash.

My initial reaction to that was that they're going to require some league or team doctors to do an exam/screening and that's going to be kinda weird. Because it's not like a broken bone in terms of uniform opinions about diagnosis.

If I was the NBA I would do the complete opposite. If anything I would raise the age limit before I lower it. What is the point of lowering it? Like where is the benefit to the league.

If its just the draft age (not playing age) I would be down for it. Almost every team has their own G League team now, Im all for letting a team draft a young kid and put them in their development team until they're age eligible. Hell if that is the case, Im for them completely taking away the age limit for the draft. If a team wants to use a draft pick on some 16 year old phenom, let them do it. But ya if you got the G League, take advantage of it. Im also sure revenue for the G League would go up big time if they had a bunch of elite prospects playing for multiple teams all year long.

exactly why even have an age limit. if teams want to take a chance on a young 16 year old phenom then let them. basically an age limit just gives poorly managed teams a better chance at landing talent through lottery luck as opposed to actual development.

I'm interested to see what happens with G League Ignite now. will it still exist? I'd like to see a new Ignite League formed, with every team having three levels: NBA team, G-League team & Ignite team. the Ignite team could be for under 19 prospects only. ideally a prospect could get drafted at any age under 22, play for the Ignite team if they a too young/raw, then move up to G-League or skip it and go straight to the NBA at any age if/when ready.

The NCAA is a not a force for good in any way. They are very much a for profit enterprise who has made far more money off of collegiate athletes than they have returned in the way of education. Lots of top college players have been busts to it made no difference. Olawakandi, Luke Jackson, Sweetney, Mateen Cleaves, Juan Dixon, Ed Obannon, Todd Fuller, Marcus Fizer, Eddie Griffen, Stromile Swift.
