Celtics Suspend Ime Udoka For 2022-23 Season, Joe Mazzulla Named Interim Head Coach

The Boston Celtics suspended Ime Udoka effective immediately for the entire 2022-23 season for violating team policies in an announcement on Thursday night.

The team will make a decision on Udoka's future at a later date.

It was reported on late Wednesday that Udoka had an intimate and consensual relationship with a female on the team staff.

"I want to apologize to our players, fans, the entire Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down. I am sorry for putting the team in this difficult situation, and I accept the team's decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will have no further comment," Udoka told Malika Andrews of ESPN.

Assistant Joe Mazzulla will replace Udoka on an interim basis.

Wtf could have happened in an consensual relationship that could justify a year long suspension and possible termination? Unless she was in a position that he could control her future with the franchise then I don’t see a problem with 2 adults in consensual relationship, I understand he’s married but that should be between him and his wife and not effect his job. It will be interesting either way when the truth comes out.

Definitely very strange. They are adults and unless it was hindering their work then I really don't see an issue here. I mean they just made it to the finals, this will definitely hurt team chemistry and morale.

This a strange situation to say the least. This will be weird for Boston not having the coach who helped you reach the finals.

I wonder how this even leaked out in the first place?

I wonder who was the last coach suspended for a whole season?

What if the replacement coach has the celtics take a step back or what if the coach takes them a step forward wins a championship? Would he replace Ime Udoka permanently?

Also you noticed he got the same punishment as Robert Sarver who sexually/physically harassed women & people working for him not a consensual relationship in comparison.

Agreed. 1 year is way too long. I'd do 3 months MAX.

It's not likely that he would do it again, so what's the punishment for if it's not a deterrent?!?

He’s not even married.

I think he broke up with this woman, so she’s now creating a hostile environment because she’s pissed. There are likely legal threats here. He got fired to save the organization from a lawsuit.

I also think he knocked her up, which comes with even more fragility.

This is direct result of the Sarver fiasco. NBA vs NBPA. NBA cant afford to suspend players because they are the product and affects the bottom line. NBA owners will try everything to retaliate to make sure they stay in control. This was most diffinitenly a warning that if you come after us just be ready we will apply the same to you.

Assuming he was in a position of power or authority, why would she have to be the one to be moved or leave the job? If company policy deems fraternization in the chain of command as an issue, the one that pays the price is always the one in the higher position

He's a fool for getting involved in this at all. We're at the point where what really happened is basically irrelevant if accusations come out. He should have understood that in these types of matters women hold all the power. He's lucky to only be suspended.

Definitely not racist, as pointed out by another user, TWolves ditched Rosas. Not as newsworthy because Ime is a head coach of a prominent franchise that just lost in the Finals.
