The best thing about the nba all star game would surely be seeing it in person. Why not play it in a 100,000 people capacity stadium?

The NFL's Pro Bowl was the worst of the worst though. Can't compare that game to the NBA All Star Game

Lmao why? Because Sean Taylor tackled a punter in the one time that he made the pro bowl? That's one of the most insane leaps I've seen taken on this forum, and I've been here a long time.

The thing is, exhibition Football can be enjoyable, but only to a certain degree. And a full game just doesnt cut it. Just look at what the NHL has done to their allstar game. They made a small 3v3 tourney between the divisions. While the NFL has its AFC and NFC, the problem is, that many great players just dont take place in the probowl because of the playoffs. Why would you set the probowl in the hottest phase of the playoffs?

Too much easy revenue to lose for the leauge ...also its somewhat of a prestige for upcoming players to say they made an allstar team...if anything just scrap the gimmicky skills challange, dunk contest, 3point contest

All star game isn’t entertaining at all unless you like defense played with 2% energy and nfl they can end there career on one hit why have that happen in a exhibition for no reason

I never watch the all star game. Didn’t even know that happened. But everything about what was happening on that court is why I have zero interest.

The only thing worth watching is the dunk contest and 3 point contest highlights. I don’t even bother watching the show since it’s loaded with commercials and pauses. In the modern era no one has time when they can just check out the highlights online. The All Star Game is not even worth watching.

Just please get Zion vs. Ja for the dunk contest and all will be good on this earth.

BTW their legacy as dunkers should be hampered for not participating in the dunk contest.

I am realizing how many old guys are on this fourm. You really can't compare the two. The NFL pro bowl sucks, lol. The NBA all-star weekend is pretty amazing probably the best of all major sports. Not just for the events themselves but the whole weekend it self is a party. Until the all star game was in Orlando I didn't realize how many came just for the parties. One thing I must say is that the dunk contest must be changed or removed other than that the NBA all-star game is fine.

Saying the NBA all star game is better than the NFL pro bowl and therefore should stick around is about the best example ever I've seen of damning with faint praise.

giberish wrote:The more physically brutal the sport, the worse any all-star exhibition game will be. The NBL's was always the worst, followed by the NHL, then the nBA, with MLB the least bad.

The other issue that's been hurting all of them is the availability to watch any player on any team play meaningful regular season games. In the NBA, if you weren't on the Lakers, Celtics or Sixers in the 80's, you weren't on national TV except the all-star game. So you didn't want to play with no effort and make NBA fans across the country think you weren't actually good. Now every game is available if you care enough to a player's reputation isn't hurt by not trying in an exhibition.

The MLB all-Star weekend is pretty boring as well would much rather watch the NBA's.

I see a lot of people saying that the Pro Bowl was so bad that it needed to be taken out of its own misery, while the NBA All star game is fine. Hell even someone saying it’s somewhat of a cultural event.

6.7 million people watched the Pro Bowl last year. That was the lowest number in 16 years. But that still did better than the NBA All star game which did 5.9.

I don’t think the NBA All Star game has the impact of is as popular as some here think it has. The NBA All star game is usually 3rd in popularity in All Star games (MLB is #1).

I'll always remember when Pats rookie RB Robert Edwards majorly tore up his knee at a flag football event during Pro Bowl weekend. Was so bad that they considered amputation at the time. It cut short his NFL career and it was remarkable that he made a comeback at all. The whole thing was just a dumb idea all around and they canceled flag football.

As to the real Pro Bowl game, I don't think players cared much for it. They just liked the free trip to Hawaii their families got.

But yeah, it's a dumb game. It's basically a game at the end of the year that nobody wants to play in and won't include players from the teams in the Superbowl. Completely pointless.

Was a big time Robert Edwards fan and remember when his enjoy occurred. Not only was it a flag football game but a flag football game on the beach. If I remember correctly the defender lost his footing and ended tacking and hurting Edwards. It was all a recipe for disaster.

I think solely looking at the T.V ratings is a problem. Other than the fact TV ratings are quickly becoming old media, one must also look at Social Media engagement (which the NBA has done well with and the MLB has struggled with), international engagement, the weekend as a whole compared to other sports (the home run derby is the only other Major event I could think of for the other major sports). I think you are leaving out a lot of factors in terms of general engagement/ratings if your main focus is just TV ratings. Ratings is far more complex today compared to yesteryear when the only forms of media was TV and radio.

I mean the majority of social media engagement for the NBA All star weekend is horrible year after year. It’s just people bashing on it constantly.

And we see a microcosm of that on here every year. It’s just constant threads and posts saying “it’s gotten so bad, it’s time to just end this”, “who even watches this anymore” and so on.

I’m just stating that the impact and relevance of the All Star weekend is getting exaggerated on here. I’m sure if you were to take a poll with NBA fans If they would care if it didn’t happen, the majority would say no. Then if you were to poll the casual sports fan if they would care, that number would be even more drastic on the don’t care side.

The Pro Bowl was boring. The All Star Weekend is....decent, I guess.

I'd make the ASG itself USA vs. the World (which will draw more int'l viewership), and the dunk contest between 3-4 NBA players and 3-4 And1/Drew League or whatever dunk specialists, or guys who can actually dunk and at an awesome level.
